Topwater98 Posted May 29, 2017 Posted May 29, 2017 I recently bought my first boat off craigslist. The trolling motor worked for a little while but then it randomly stopped. Since then, it sometimes works sometimes doesn't. I don't think it is a problem with the electrical because it sometimes starts if I tap the propeller with a stick. It almost seems like it is getting stuck. When it does work, it works perfectly and goes plenty fast. I have never had a trolling motor before so I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what to try first. I'm adding a couple pictures of the motor. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted May 29, 2017 Super User Posted May 29, 2017 Sounds like the brushes in the motor are worn out. 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted May 29, 2017 Super User Posted May 29, 2017 If the prop spins freely when spun by hand, it is not a mechanical "stuck" problem. I agree it's most likely the motor, and most likely the brushes. Which may be serviceable, not sure. I think they have brushes. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted May 29, 2017 Super User Posted May 29, 2017 Agree with the above, probably the brushes Quote
RUSS9999 Posted May 29, 2017 Posted May 29, 2017 Agree, probably the brushes. Have not done one in a long time, but like most things that have brushes it's an easy job. Quote
Topwater98 Posted May 29, 2017 Author Posted May 29, 2017 Thanks! I will probably get a friend to help since I don't know anything about how the trolling motor works. At least I know what is wrong. Quote
