I'm looking to buy a cheap/budget MH mod fast action casting rod. Going to use this as an all around rod for everything that can't be fished on a M. Looking for something under $80

Had a couple of hours to kill near Philly last week, so I dropped into a DSG with a separate "lodge" and went though most of their isles. Picked up a couple of baits, including a pop-x (don't love it). Had a Quantum Escalade in my hand for a bit, and I almost pulled the trigger. The 7' MH had a nice feel, bend and balance. It goes for $49.99, and you can get a $10 of $50 coupon with little effort, as well as other discounts as well, so it can be had for $40 or less. Seemed like a good all around rod.

Abu Garcia has a couple rods (Veritas, Vengeance) in that price range that are decent.  Berkeley's Lightning and Lightning Shock rods are perennial favorites.

It was labeled fast, it bent down to about half way down the blank with moderate pressure (did I mention I was there for a while) I think it would be good for most baits, probably not that good for cranking.

I'm not doing heavy cranking or big swimbaits. i just need a rod for med depth cranks, spinners, buzzbaits, and basically every bigger, higher resistance lure I cant fish on a M fast action rod. $ is tight so I'm looking for an all around MH rod. I don't need 10 different technique specific rods, just a few all arounds and MH mod or mod-fast happens to be one of them

I've had a few DSG Tech Spec rods for years and they are great rods for the money.

I have one of DSG's older 7' MH house brand rods (Quest I think) Its hands down my favorite frog rod (It's that time!) great larger spinnerbait, chatter, lipless and buzzbait rod. It also does ok with pitching and jigs, although I have others that I prefer for that. I get crazy looks when I take it to live line striped bass and cut the frog off and tie a live bait hook. Good stick.

What's the rod taper, meaning how much of a difference is there between Medium and fast action. I want a rod I can use for cranks ans things like jigs, or is that asking for too much. Is there a rod that performs well with cranks and other types of lures?

If I had to pick one do-all-rod I would probably buy a composite. Kinda the best of both worlds.

And a MH/fast is probably the most universal setup.

I was told as follows;

Medium power - senkos, lipless, squarbills, medium divers, walking baits, finesse jigs, etc

Medium Heavy - bigger plastics, texas rigs, jigs, frogs, buzzbaits, deep cranks, chatter baits, spinnerbaits, and anything that will create a lot of drag in the water (blades/bills/weight)

Up until i can get a job I'm going to have 4 rods total-

A M power 6'6" or 7' spinning setup for lures below 1/4

A M power fast action baitcaster for stated lures

A MH baitcaster, mod-fast to fast action for stated lures

A H baitcaster for frogging and flipping

I basically need an all around MH rod that can fish the lures stated above, I've read that composite rods are great for cranks but not as sensitive as graphite for, jigs, t rigs, etc. Seems like most 7' or 7'3 rods I've seen are MH fast action. The major question is, is MH fast action TOO fast for what I'm going to be using it for. Probably overthinking again but it is what it is

Honestly at 80 you would be crazy not to save up 20 more and grab a dobyns fury right now from Tackle warehouse while the memorial sale is going on.

If you go on eBay, you can get the 734c for $83.99. Check under couch the cushions, I'm sure you can dig up $3.99.

I have over a dozen H2O rods from Academy. I find them on sale for under $30 all the time and they fish very similar to the Veritas IMO, great rods for the money.

Tbh  i don't even have $80 to spend, probably closer to $60. I just HATE this system of saving some money, buying something and starting over. Can't wait till I can get a job.

I have an Academy not that far from my house, guess I could pop by and see what they have on sale. At this point the H2O rods seem the most reasonable based on price

Heh... It doesn't stop then.  Trust me.

Set your budget, get something in that price range, and go fishing... $60 is plenty to get a good enough rod to catch fish.  People on here like to obsess about equipment, but you can be a productive angler with faaaar more modest stuff.

You can find the Abu Veracity on sale on one of the 3 bigger websites for $69 right now. Down from $159. You can find some great deals right now on all the Abu Vendetta 2.0 rods for around $70,  but one rod you can grab quickly at Dicks is the blue Tech Spech for $45 which is a nice rod, Shimano Selles for $39, I saw a Silver Max on a Vengence rod for $60. Sell the reel online and you have a $15 rod. I always buy combos and sell the reel. You can get a nice $100 Rod for $30 or so by buying a Lew's or BPS combo. Same with Academy. That is the best way to save money imo and get more value.

If you can find one on sale, I love my fenwick hmg. It's medium heavy fast, but I can easily cast a weightless senko, yesterday I was casting a tiny hula popper, the single treble one that's for panfish, it wasn't far, 20' or so, but it zips it out there.

I've been thinking about that. Who really NEEDS a  $500 rod? I can catch the same fish on a $50, probably not the same quality but still a rod

Where do I find those kind of combos? Here on the flea market, or somewhere else?

Lightning shocks are the ultimate budget rods. I fish them next to my lews, shimanos and croixs and they catch just as many fish. Got them for $9 at walmart too lol
