I have very little knowledge and am looking to buy one soon! There's a lot of good ones out there. You'll be best served to match a rig to suit your needs. That concept takes time even for an experienced buyer to get right. So I'd encourage you to eliminate a time table. Arming yourself with knowledge will enable you to buy with confidence. You'll be glad you did, in the short & especially in the long run. I have a Lund Pro-V Bass and love it. However I couldn't recommend it to you not knowing, where & how you'd be using, fishing & even storing it. A-Jay 1 Quote
3dees Posted May 27, 2017 Posted May 27, 2017 lots to think about. how much are you looking to spend? new or used? new can go from 12,000 to over 40,000. used, and you take your chances, but there are great deals out there. used with some warranty left is the best bet imo. you can fish from a 16' boat the same way as a 20'. the larger boats will be safer in big waters and provide more stability and speed. small tins can be pulled with smaller vehicles. take your time. the worse thing you can do is buy on impulse. whatever questions you have can be answered on this site and others. 1 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted May 28, 2017 Super User Posted May 28, 2017 The type of water you fish and your style of fishing, followed by your budget, should dictate the boat you buy. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted May 28, 2017 Super User Posted May 28, 2017 Before you look at which boat lets talk about where you want to use this boat. Are you going to primarily fish small lakes, ponds and smaller rivers? A 144 to sixteen foot john boat with an engine ranging from ( to 25 horse power might be what you would want to start with, A boat like this may be all you need. I fished out of several of these while fishing small lakes and rivers like the Susquehanna River in PA. I had a special rock guard that looked like a circle welded up and added to the 9.9 hp engine, and a rear transom mount trolling motor. If you are fishing bigger water there are lots of used Alumacrafts, G3s Lowe Boats, XPress Boats, etc. The highest end models come from companies like Crestliner, Ranger, Triton, Lund etc. For bigger waters and waters, where faster boats will be encountered, then a boat ranging in size from 17 1/2 to 20 foot may meet your needs. Mod V boats are good for most waters but if you intend to fish the biggest waters then definitely consider a full deep Vee hull like the Lund and Polar Kraft are so well known for. I own the boat in the first picture but the second picture shows what the Deep Vee boat looks like. Quote
