MobyGrape Posted May 27, 2017 Posted May 27, 2017 I've read that some people apply glue onto their knot on the hook, lure etc. Does this actually strengthen the knot? Does it matter if it's mono or braid line? What type/brand glue is used? How long do you let it dry for? Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted May 27, 2017 Super User Posted May 27, 2017 When I first started off tying leaders on braid, using the Alberto knot, it was suggested that a small amount of super glue would increase the knot integrity. I did it that way for the first season using this set up. Second season, I didn't have any glue, so I just went with the uncoated knot. Guess what? Neither way caused a break at that knot. Now I ignore the glue and go strictly with properly tying a good knot. 1 Quote
frosty Posted May 27, 2017 Posted May 27, 2017 The glue on the knot comes from the early days of braid. I remember in the early 90's when braid first hit the market around here, dad bought a spool and the knots slipped pretty bad. The guy at the outdoor store said you have to glue the knot so it won't slip. I use power pro in 20 lb test and 50 lb test and I have never had an issue with knot strength. Quote
Super User MickD Posted May 27, 2017 Super User Posted May 27, 2017 A proper knot properly tied needs no glue. In fact, I suspect that if one relies on glue, they may get a little sloppy in knot tying. I think that super glue is the most commonly used glue, and if the line is moist, it will cure almost instantly. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted May 27, 2017 Global Moderator Posted May 27, 2017 Never used glue...If you tie your knot, any knot correctly, you don't need it. Mike 3 Quote
MobyGrape Posted May 27, 2017 Author Posted May 27, 2017 Ok.......Thanks to everyone for their input. Proper knot, no glue it is! Quote
Fisher-O-men Posted May 27, 2017 Posted May 27, 2017 I have always wondered if the glue could mess with the chemical makeup of the line. Maybe weaken it? Quote
Super User Darren. Posted May 27, 2017 Super User Posted May 27, 2017 I have used a dot of superglue in the past, as other have. These days I don't need it. However, I found tying a slick line like P-Line Floroclear will break apart unless I add more wraps with the braid and line. So if you're finding a knot slipping, try adding a few wraps and see if it helps. As always, cinch down slowly, use saliva (or don't) and give a nice pull to make sure it's holding before you use it. XpressJeff Posted May 27, 2017 Posted May 27, 2017 I have been using a drop of super glue on leader knots. I am just getting back into fishing anyway so this year I am doing a whole bunch of things for the first time anyway. Whether I continue it or not is get to be seen. I keep the glue around for some plastic bait applications anyway. Good to hear what others are doing too! Quote
BobP Posted May 27, 2017 Posted May 27, 2017 Yes it will strengthen a knot. But it also makes the knot bigger and hard, which may cause it to stick in the rod's tip top guide when reeling line in. So no, I just tie good knot and leave it at that. Quote
Preytorien Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 In the super rare event that I'll tie on a leader to my braid I sometimes use glue since the braid I've been using (Gliss) is very slick and I've had several slips, even with 10 turns of an Alberto knot Quote
