Fadetoblack188 Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 What's up I finally caved and bought one of the spro rats. I got the 40 size. My baitcaster is spooled with 20lb braid. My question is how are you guys rigging them? Should I tie braid directly to rat? Tie on a flouro leader then tie direct? ( what size flouro). Or should I use a tactical angler clip on either the end of braid and then to rat or braid-leader-clip-rat? sorry this has probably been asked just not sure what way is right. Thanks Quote
Super User NHBull Posted May 25, 2017 Super User Posted May 25, 2017 I have fished my all the ways you mentioned. Right now it is just tied directly to braid. If you use a clip you roll have to retrieve with your tip up. Walk and stop randomly works best for me Quote
Fadetoblack188 Posted May 25, 2017 Author Posted May 25, 2017 Thank you. Also is the 40 size ok? Should I have gone with the 30? Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 25, 2017 Super User Posted May 25, 2017 I currently have mine on a medium 6-6 Lightning Rod with 15# mono. It loads up the medium rod excessively when I cast. It would probably work better on a MH rod. I don't think this bait has been around long enough for there to be a conventional wisdom regarding the rod/reel/line setup. I used it at my buddy's pond Sunday and caught about 10 on it. It was overcast all day. I don't think I lost a single fish on it. Quote

Fadetoblack188 Posted May 25, 2017 Author Posted May 25, 2017 Really!? I have heard the 40 is pretty big already Quote
CTGalloway21 Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 I only use the 2 bigger sizes. 20lb braid is kinda on the small side. I toss them on my swimbait rods with 65lb lb braid. I tie direct. The tails suck that come with the rats. Once they get stretched, they hang on the hooks every cast. Have to replace with a zoom trick worm. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted May 25, 2017 Super User Posted May 25, 2017 I fish the 40 size with straight 40lb braid. Quote
Fadetoblack188 Posted May 25, 2017 Author Posted May 25, 2017 Alright I'll respool tonight with 40lb braid. My rod is a medium Quote
Super User Angry John Posted May 25, 2017 Super User Posted May 25, 2017 I run my 40 on my frog rod which is a 735. I have 65lb braid on this setup and i throw it a long way as i dont worry about the braid snapping. I use the largest owner welded snap on this and my other hard baits like the black dog shell cracker g2. With large top waters i dont worry about visibility and just go strait braid. I do run a leader of 20 lb flouro or YHB on my bbz trout and baits that run sub surface. Quote
Fadetoblack188 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 Thanks guys.. just respooled with 50lb braid. Also picked up a rat 30 as well incase the rod can't handle the 40. Guess I'll buy another rod soon Quote
Super User Angry John Posted May 26, 2017 Super User Posted May 26, 2017 A 30 should do fine on a standard medium. A 40 needs to be on a beefy mh or h. A lot of guys in the sb game way overload their gear. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted May 26, 2017 Super User Posted May 26, 2017 If you don't have a set up with 40 lb already, I would not do so for this bait. I have used 20 lb for yrs and have never had a problem, if it does break, it floats and there was probably a weakness in the braid.......also, the likelihood that you will be tossing this in a garden is slim. Super User RoLo Posted May 26, 2017 Super User Posted May 26, 2017 With respect to freshwater bass, the nature of the cover you're working normally determines the proper line-test to use. I'd personally opt for 30-lb braid and tie it directly to the rat, frog, spoon, plug, spinner, jig, worm (you get the picture) Roger Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 26, 2017 Super User Posted May 26, 2017 Medium what rod? The size 40 rat weighs 1 oz. Tom 1 Quote

Fadetoblack188 Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 50lb braid won't have an issue casting a size 30 or 40? Quote

I have not had a rapid stop on mine but with 65 i dont think i will ever have issues. 50 will be good for frogs also. Quote
