brent245 Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Left my leatherman rebar at my spot last night. I pulled a treble out of a fish and put it down in the dark and didn't realize it was gone until this evening. Went back and it was gone. Now I guess I need a replacement. What are you guys using? Quote
CenCal fisher Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Sounds like a good time to upgrade to the wave Quote
brent245 Posted May 24, 2017 Author Posted May 24, 2017 Thoughts on the gerbers? My only complaint with the leatheran was you can't open it with one hand. The gerbers allow you to slide out the pliers with one hand. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 If it's just for fishing get a normal pair of fishing pliers, ideally one with a sheath and wear that. I use a leatherman all the time for work and life in general, but it's inefficient for fishing. A conventional pair of fishing pliers is much more convenient. 3 Quote
CenCal fisher Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 I haven't owned a Gerber. My friend has one and it feels cheaper than my leatherman. The knives are in the outside of the wave and I get to the pliers all the time one handed by pushing it on my side to help open it Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted May 24, 2017 Super User Posted May 24, 2017 I have two Gerber multi tools. Bought one and got a second as a gift. Much more of a real tool than the Leatherman. If I ever manage to misplace both Gerbers, I will be buying one of the SOG versions. A bit pricy, but the real thing. 4 Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted May 24, 2017 Super User Posted May 24, 2017 I have a Gerber as well as other brands. The Gerber is the one on my hip, the others are spread out in different spots, drawers, toolbox, glovebox, as "backups". Quote
ScottDB Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Just a pair of fishing pliers and a sheath hooked onto my back pocket. Has a little pinch point that cuts all line smoothly and a needle nose. The only 2 things I ever seem to need. 1 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted May 24, 2017 Super User Posted May 24, 2017 I use the Buck 732 fin x-tract. Pliers, scissors, knife and screwdrivers. I like the fact that all the tools on it can be opened with one hand. The other great thing about it is the knife is pretty beefy unlike most multi-tools. Quote
tholmes Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 I've been carrying a Gerber for 15 years. I own other brands of multi-tools, but none can match the quality of Gerber. Tom Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted May 25, 2017 Super User Posted May 25, 2017 Abel pliers and sheath. Buy it once. Mine are 20+ years old. 2 Quote

I understand your need to brag about how much money you spend on things, but anyone who spends that amount of money on a pair of pliers is .............................................................. dang, cant think of a good word that won't get me in trouble. I accidentally lost/dumped easily $100-150 in crankbaits from my kayak and posted about it recently (in addition to lots of other expensive bad luck that weekend). I'm not going to bang on anyone else on here for spending what they can afford on good tools. It's just something that happens on the water. Similarly, I'm not going to bang on anyone else for their loss, or what they choose to spend money on. jealousy/contempt just isn't a healthy mindset. Props to @Redlinerobert and hopefully his never dump into a lake. I've probably spent more time and money replacing cheap stuff that's broken/failed than I have on high quality gear. 1 Quote

Totally understand, but it's like someone dumping their Citica in the lake and having people recommend them replace it with a Steez. The line gets old after a while. Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 I do't disagree, but Leathermans aren't cheap, either. And I hate being the preachy guy (I absolutely suck at it and kind of revile it). I just didn't immediately interpret the post the same way, I guess. Still, good tools are a good thing. Most of my bass "tools" consist of KVD gear, needle nosed pliers and wire cutters from Home Depot (I can't tell you the brand), and a few pairs of stainless Kelly forceps I've taken from family/friends who are EMTs, doctors, nurses, etc. lol 1 Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted May 25, 2017 Super User Posted May 25, 2017 If you have it, and you have earned it, spend it and show it to us. I never would have known about the $500 pliers had I not read Roberts post. I'm not gonna buy them, as my kids like to eat, but I enjoy seeing what's out there. 4 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted May 25, 2017 Super User Posted May 25, 2017 $50 tool or $500 tool....$500 boat or $50k boat....They are the same things only different. And id much rather fish from a 50k boat 4 Quote
Vinjints Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 I carry a Gerber MP600, but that's not my fishing tool. I have Leatherman, SOG, Victorinox, Gerber and they all belong in different places, bags, kits. The Gerber was chosen as my backup tool in my fishing bag for the one handed access should something happen to my fishing pliers. Otherwise, it's a repair tool. Plus, it's easier to replace ($) should it fall in the drink compared to my LM Charge or other expensive MT. I think from a reach perspective, you're much better off with dedicated fishing pliers anyway. Screwdrivers, saws, can openers aren't critical to land or unhook a fish. File might be the only exception that could be added to a set of pliers with a cutter. Quote

Depends on how you look at it. If I think about the money I spent on cheap pliers over the last 20 years it probably adds up to $500 That kind of money spent on something that lasts that long seems like a good investment. 2 Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted May 25, 2017 Super User Posted May 25, 2017 Sorry you feel that way @jbsoonerfan. Based on other posts it seems others don't see it the way you do either. That is the beauty of having choices. ** Oh and by the way they aren't $500. More like half that for the black ones. When I bought them literally 20 years ago they were about $200 if I recall. http://www.tackledirect.com/abel2pliers.html 4 Quote

Super User DogBone_384 Posted May 25, 2017 Super User Posted May 25, 2017 (edited) Gerber Multi-Plier 600. One handed operation and made in USA. Forgot to mention that Gerber offers discounts to public safety and military personnel. Details are on their website. To qualify, you'll need to email them a copy of your ID. In all seriousness, a good set of pliers are worth the money. They wont rust, the jaws are replaceable, and as long as you don't lose them (hence the lanyard/sheath) they will literally last forever. I use to buy the cheap pliers but after a few fishing trips they'd be rusted out. Mind you, this was the mid 90's when these particular pliers caught my attention. At the time I also considered Van Staal pliers, but if I recall they were more expensive. 3 Quote
