Lures'n'Liberty Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 I've been reading through the threads here and have an idea for a sticky thread in the tackle section. What does one "need" to start out with a full spectrum of tackle in their box and get the most bang for their buck? What plastics are the most versatile, what color spinners should you get first, which 3 or 4 jigs, crankbaits, jerkbaits, topwater, divers, frogs, etc. Which terminal tackle should be in every box? Yes, MTB and LTB are great ways to build up your tackle and try new things, but they don't ensure that you've got all the basics to start with. Since MTB and LTB both start at about $15 per month before discounts, let's give a budget of $60, or the equivalent of 4 months subscription to either. If you want to go for bonus points, make the budget $100 and add a rod, reel, and tackle storage system. Quote

Good intention, but we'll be paving to road south, It is so dependent on where and how one fishes that a tackle box that makes sense for someone in CA, will be useless, or near so in New England, just as and example. Not only that, but because of the group bias, the poor newbies will end up with (depending on when the list is made) the InterWeb® lure de jour. (Am I the only one that has no use for the Plopper?). 1 Quote
ksboy Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 The article by Joe Bailey is appropriate and well-written. Thanks for your experience, Joe. I hope at least one of your six kids catches the (bass-fishing) bug from you. 1 Quote

That's one of the reasons I kept the price low, hoping to eliminate a lot of that. With little comment and repetition, it certainly looks like 4/0 worm hooks and a bag of darker green senkos belong in every box and I'm in full agreement. 194 Watermelon w/ Black Flake seems to be the #1 across the board although I tend to prefer the green pumpkins Quote
ksboy Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 I just read RW's advice for beginners. Great piece of information and really true. Back in 2006 when he wrote it, the Senko was probably the best thing in the world and probably priced about right. These days, at $8 per bag of 6 or 8 (at WalMart) they are a little expensive for me. There are lots of other companies that make the "Senko-type" worm that last longer (the Senko is VERY soft and only last a catch or two). Of course, since 2006 almost everything has doubled in price. Great article, Kent!!! 1 Quote
