Tom Bass Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 I was in Bass Pro yesterday and they have a 2006 Nitro 750 SC w/ 90hp Merc on sale for $16,895. According to the Nitro website this boat should list at $21,900 total cost with shipping. The BPS price includes all shipping, prep and destination charges. http://www.nitroboats.com/boat/index.cfm?boat=2124 My questions: 1) Do any of you have experience with this boat? 2) Does $17K sound like a good deal? 3) Is 90hp a good solid number for needed horse power for a boat this of size? 4) Are there comparable boats in this category for less money? I have 2 boats now. A Regal 2120 Deck Boat that is my pleasure boat and a 12.6' Lowe Sea Nymph with a 9.9 Merc 2 stroke that is my fishing boat. After yesterday's outing in the Sea Nymph I have determined that I want a boat for fishing that is made for the kind of fishing that I want to do. My Regal is not a one man launching boat and it isn't designed for fishing. There is no way to mount a trolling motor and serious fishing accessories. I bought it for fun, not for serious fishing. I have been toying with the idea of buying a fishing boat which included an upgraded version of a Jon boat or a Utility boat, like a lafger version of the fishing boat I have. but I want some comfort and convenience in the boat I buy. I don't intend to fish tournaments. I don't need a 250 HP bass fishing machine. I just want something that has some power and all of the accessories that I'll need to enjoy many days out on the lake. SEE MY OTHER POST BELOW Thanks, Tom Quote
NBR Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 I would check the rated horse power for the boat. Often packaged boats come with engines below rated boat HP capacity and you might want to switch out the engine for one of maximum rated boat HP. It will cost a bit more but I think in the long pull you will be happier. The Nitro is a fine boat, not in the class of Ranger, Triton or Champion but still a nice piece of equipment. When I am ready for a new boat Nitro will certainly be among those considered. The price sounds good to me. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted January 7, 2007 Super User Posted January 7, 2007 Just checking the Nitro's for sale, I found 3 boats, all 2004's and 882 models (18 1/2 footers) with 150's on them for what you'll spend on that boat. At nearly 30% underhorsepowered, the performance of that boat won't be optimum, that's for sure. There are tons of used boats out there right now at bargain prices. There will only be more as the boat show season comes around. I've never understood why anyone would buy new and underpower a rig from the git go. It always turns out to be a loser. If you can't afford the boat with a 135hp on it I'd suggest moving down in size so you can afford a maxed HP boat or else buy used. Quote
Hale Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 I have the 640LX with the 90hp ELPTO ...the 640 is smaller than what you are looking and screams with 90 (different prop and I can get up in the mid 50s). Its also their cheapest model.... Quote
Tom Bass Posted January 8, 2007 Author Posted January 8, 2007 Gents, Thank you all very much for your repiles. The 90 horse engine might be adequate for my type of fishing. I am not looking for "hole shot" and speed at this time but your recommendations do make me wonder if a year from now I might regret a 90 horse motor. I found another "used" boat that sounds okay to me but I thought I'd see what y'all think. Here goes: Used 2003 Nitro 750 SC. 125HP Merc. 50 hours on boat. Fish Finder & Depth Finder, trolling motor, T&t custom drive on swing away tongue single axle trailer (that's what's in the ad) for $11,900. The photo in Boat Trader looks okay but you never know with black and white thumb nail photos. What do you think about this used boat? It is being sold at a boat sales shop nearby so I would have some recourse if the thing is a flop or has problems. Thanks, Tom Quote
HPBB Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 I would go with the used one with the 125HP. bigger motor (50Hr is nothing, its still new)cheeper, and only 3 years old I would go used, then if you want any upgrades you have an extra $6000, that is a lot of extras. Quote
hwsanders Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 I have a 2005 750 DC (Dual consoul) w/90 Merc. I can tell you that with what you say you want to use this boat for it should fit the bill. Mine will go about 43 mph (GPS measured) plenty fast enough. Is quite stable and rather good on fuel consumption. I will say that the casting deck is a little tight especially if you are using the seat ( I purchase one of those "s" shaped seat post that allows you to sit a little farther back). All in all I am completely satisfied with mine. The only reason I purchased a one year old new on the floor model was due to getting a better deal from BassPro for taking it off the floor for there newer models coming in. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted January 10, 2007 Super User Posted January 10, 2007 NO opinions? Pretty good deal. Quote
Tom Bass Posted January 11, 2007 Author Posted January 11, 2007 Gents, Thanks for your replies. I'll be calling the dealer that has the used Nitro tomorrow and checking it out. The boat is rated for 135 HP max so I figure a boat with 50 hours on it that is failrly new with a 125HP motor for $11.9K is worth looking at. My truck will haul it with ease and it should fit in my covered storage area along with my Regal with no problems. A longer boat might cause me some storage problems, like more money for another storage area. I like the fact that this boat is short but wide with some power to push it. I'll let y'all know how things go. I'm just a little excited about this. I hope things fall into place. Quote
