brent245 Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 So my old st Croix 7'1 MH- fast jig/bait rod broke. I went to get another at bass pro but they didn't have the same one. What I ended up getting was a. St Croix 7'6" MH- mod/fast which says its for light flipping. I'm typically fishing treble hook topwater (spro rats, ploppers, pompadour), squarebills, lipless cranks, chatterbaits, smaller glide baits, occasionally plastics. I wanted a longer rod to bomb these out there so I though this would work, but it seems really stiff. Maybe I'm just not used to it yet. Thoughts? Quote
primetime Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 I usually like my rod for throwing anything with treble hooks to be Moderate Fast or even a bit softer so it has more flex, but I am not familiar with all the St. Croix rods, I know they have a ton of choices, models, and one MH Fast may feel different than another which is labeled as the same Power/tip. If you don't like the feel of the rod, return it to get what you like. If you like a fast tip, liked the one that broke, keep looking until you find one you like. I would return it if you have doubts, You will probably always wish you purchased a different rod if it feels to heavy for your liking. One Rod can say Fast and feel like a whip compared to one that is the same power and labeled Mod Fast so I guess my point is buy the one that you like regardless of what the specs say. I never buy rods online for that reason. I have ordered rods xfast and when they show up they are not what I expected. Quote
npl_texas Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 I bought this rod for Chatterbaits. It's too heavy for me. I sold it. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 A "MH" st croix is pretty stout. A Med would fit the bill. 2 Quote
brent245 Posted May 22, 2017 Author Posted May 22, 2017 Well this particular one is a casting rod. Quote
RichF Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 I have the Rage in the same specs. The topwaters you mentioned are pretty large, with good size trebles so I think you could get away with throwing them on that rod (if you're good about adjusting your drag on the fly while fighting fish). It does have a fairly soft tip because of the moderate fast action but there's quite a bit of backbone. It's certainly not ideal for any of those techniques accept pitching/flipping plastics or jigs. It could work for bladed jigs as well, though not my first choice. I tried quite a few baits/techniques with this rod last year but never really could find a perfect match. I initially threw 5 - 7 inch paddle tail swimbaits with it. It worked ok but I wanted something a touch stouter. I tried bladed jigs after. Again, it worked ok but it was nowhere near as good as my glass rod. I used it for swing head jigs for a while and didn't care for that. I finally just used it for it's intended purpose as a light flipping rod. Definitely the best use for it. It's a bit of a weird rod to me. Definitely one of my least favorites. It'll be staying home 99.9% of the time. Quote
