ScottDB Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 I was at Cabelas today in the discount section and found a Gopro Hero 5 $100 off so I had to pick it up. It's nothing special but I'm happy with this investment I've made. 7 Quote
BassnChris Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 I love having gopros on my boat. I run 2 of them in a 5 minute loop. When someone catches a fish or something happens that I want video or a picture of.....I press the shutter button and the last 5 minutes of video is saved......then I have the video or I can pull stills off of the video. I used to almost never takes pics of my fish.....now I always take pics. I think youl 'll live it. Glad you got back deal. 2 Quote

I was just recording continuously but this is way better and it'll save memory space. 14 minutes ago, scaleface said: I found a gopro in the Gulf of Mexico . I've watched some videos a while back and they found some interesting stuff. Quote

Super User JustJames Posted May 21, 2017 Super User Posted May 21, 2017 I don't have GoPro but a knockoff one. Used it once or twice on fishing but I have a mount on my motorcycle. I plan to mount that also on kayak so I don't have to pull my phone out to take a picture. Quote

WDE Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 Voice activation on the Hero 5 is a great feature. It's kind of wonky at times, but I've used it quite a bit. 1 Quote
Mumbly Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 Guessing the video was taken using a chest mount? I have been back and forth on whether the chest or hat mount is better for me and can't really decide. I move my head a lot more than I ever thought I did. 1 Quote

I was sitting at the store trying to figure out which one I wanted.. I figured the chest mount would be better overall because like you said I'm always turning my head. 1 Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted May 22, 2017 Super User Posted May 22, 2017 I use both. Chest is more stable and you get a view of the retrieve. Head I use to capture jumps and releases and added perspective. It's a lot of hardware though. Head strap is darn uncomfortable so I use a baseball cap type from Samtree from Amazon. Audio on GP is poor esp in a waterproof case. May want a lavalier mic too. 1 Quote
MacBassin Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 I also prefer a chest mount. Bought a case with access to the ports for a mic as well... Except that makes the gopro open to water damage so be a bit more cautious! Quote
UPSmallie Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 Very nice! I've been working on my GoPro videos as well lately and here's two basic tips I can give you 1. When it's pouring rain and you are outside fishing with your GoPro, from time to time swipe the camera lense with your fingers to clear off rain droplets. Usually I do this every 15 minutes or so after I've reeled in my lure. Your fingers won't scratch or smudge the lense and you won't be kicking yourself when you look back at your footage and notice 50% of the camera screen was covered by a giant raindrop. Had that happen on my PB smallmouth (Ouch!) 2. I, too, started with a chest mount. It does work great, but if you are ever sitting while fishing, be prepared for lots and lots of knee footage. I bought a head-strap mount and haven't had any complaints. Even if I'm not sitting, I like the general 'eye-view' camera angle it gives me. A lot of the fun is just looking back on past footage and reliving the excitement you experienced while landing the fish. Best of luck this season. 1 Quote
BassnChris Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 I mount my cameras to the boat on 1" ram mounts with cam do battery eliminates so I don't have to worry about batteries dieing. Quote

I bought an extra battery so I have about 3 hours of life to work with. I thought about getting a battery pack or something to keep it constantly charging but as of now 3 hours is more than enough for me to work with. 12 hours ago, Paul Roberts said: I use both. Today I went fishing with my knockoff, caught three fish, first on jerk bait the last two on fat ika, but none of them got a good video capture due to head mount. bad samples 1. Fat Ika, slipped, head moving wrong aiming. Sorry for that bad thing in my mouth. I was having that before I caught that fish. 2. Jerkbait, Did you fall over in the first video? It looked like it and made me laugh haha. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 23, 2017 Super User Posted May 23, 2017 Yup slip on wet grass luckily the fish is still there 1 Quote

Soaked my muck boots and almost ruined my phone too. Kept the fish though! Quote
Dorado Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 Tip if you're using a head strap while mounting your GoPro. Learned this the hard way. Move the swivel so that the camera is pointed down at a 45 degree angle when filming. Several weeks ago, I had my GoPro running live when I hooked into my PB Crappie. My angle was pointed 0 degrees and I captured the mountains in the background during the entire capture. At least I have a solid memory only when it comes to fishing :/ 1 Quote

It really comes in handy! 1 Quote

It's super easy to set up it took 5 minutes at the most. There's another one called Splice I believe and it let's you edit everything right there. Edit: The editing app is called Quik. I messed around with it for a bit it's very simplistic editing and you can't do a whole lot but it's free and works well! 1 Quote

I didn't even know this was an option. That works PERFECT. I have two now, one for me and one for a son. Or both boys can run them if I have them both out, they think it's pretty cool. They can go on their own little adventure with them and 30 years from now they can watch the videos, that is priceless. One is the Hero Black 4 and the other is the Black 5 which I've only had for a couple of weeks. The 5 is a HUGE upgrade, and when I say huge I mean HUGE. Like a previous member said, if you put the waterproof case on the 4 the sound is TERRIBLE. But the 5 is already waterproof so you only have one case to mess with and it doesn't cut down on the sound. You also get the screen on the back of the camera which I love. I can't remember the actually picture quality but I'm sure there's a big upgrade as well. 1 Quote
