Skspacemonkey Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 What is the strongest knot for monofilament and fluorocarbon lines? Quote
Todd2 Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 Fish N Fool knot is the strongest I've used. Beat the Palomar in Knot Wars. It works great for mono or braid. I can't speak about it for fluorocarbon. 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 Hello again. This is a question you'll get a bunch of opinions on based on the responder's personal preference. 'Knot Wars' crowned the 'Fishin-Fool' knot as the strongest for these lines, but I am partial to the SanDiego Jam for Fluorocarbon and the Palomar for mono and braid. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted May 20, 2017 Super User Posted May 20, 2017 I use the palomar and uni for mono, flouro, I don't do. Quote

Super User Catt Posted May 20, 2017 Super User Posted May 20, 2017 (edited) Palomar for mono, flouro, & braid Never had a knot slip or break Well let me correct that, if I'm hung up in 15' I'm gonna have to break off & aint got idea where it broke! But a fish break it...nah! Edited May 20, 2017 by Catt Operator error 2 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted May 20, 2017 Super User Posted May 20, 2017 If you are looking for one knot that works for everything, the improved uni is the best choice. truth be to, most of knots that will be named will work fine, It really comes down to the one you can tie perfectly every time........that is why many have wandered from the palomar 2 Quote

I tie it for everything I can, with notable exception being a drop shot (Palomir). It's just quick and easy to tie and strong as hell. It's also a lot easier to tie when my hands are cold or wet. Super User Crestliner2008 Posted May 20, 2017 Super User Posted May 20, 2017 I've been using the Trilene knot for over 30 years. No problems, no worries. 6 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted May 20, 2017 Super User Posted May 20, 2017 This is what I have used and can tie in my sleep. never a problem Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 20, 2017 Super User Posted May 20, 2017 I think any fishing knot will work if you tie it PERFECTLY. If it ain't perfect, it ain't good enough. That said, my suggestion is the Palomar for single hooks and the 16/20 (also known as Pitzen and Duncan) for lures. 2 Quote

That might explain why I've been faithful to the 'Uni-knot' for over 50 yrs. which practically ties itself. I've used the uni-knot in freshwater & saltwater, for fish weighing several ounces to several hundred pounds. Though I've lost fish, plenty of them, I can't blame a single loss on a failed Uni-knot. A recent article in Fishing Facts showed the Trilene knot to be as strong as any in mono and adequate for braid. That's good news for me as I find it very easy to tie. Not sure I'd trust it on slick lines like Gliss and NanoFil but I don't use them any more. Safe bet with braid is to add a couple more turns. It seems to be slip free even with 8 strands. 2 Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 20, 2017 Super User Posted May 20, 2017 If one can not tie a Palomar knot with extreme precision every single time I would question their ability to tie any knot. 4 Quote

The rookie mistake and not talked about enough is that noob's allow the line to cross over and it isn't until they loose a few that they learn to tie it properly 1 Quote

Sometimes I get line twist and struggle to tie a proper palomar knot with braid. Never had that problem with fluoro or mono. It seems to happen mostly to my baitcaster with braid. I don't recall any issues with my spinning braid. Quote

Todd2 Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 My older brother taught me the Palomar sometime in the mid 80's. I don't think he ever told me the name, so I probably used it 10 years before I knew it. The Palomar will serve you well, I've heard people say it doesn't work well with fluoro but I only buy mono or braid...mostly mono where it works great. Having said that...do a little test. Take two identical jigs, about a two feet of mono. On one end tie your palomar, the other end tie a fish n fool (double uni). Pull till one breaks. Every time I've done this, the Palomar breaks first. I can even retie a fresh palomar against same FNF knot and the Palomar still breaks. After around 3 Times, the fresh palomar will finally beat the 3x FNF. This, along with Knot Wars testing is why I switched to the FNF knot after almost 30 years of using the palomar except for drop shoting. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted May 21, 2017 Super User Posted May 21, 2017 For mono I use the trilene knot mostly . Its a 100 percent knot . If you use an improved cinch then you are almost tying the trilene anyways so why not make the switch to a stronger knot . 1 Quote
FishingInSC Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 Knot strength can be tested in a lab. But the best knot is probably the one that you are proficient in! There are "operator" variables...right knot for the application, twisted line, not wetting line, cinching down too hard/not hard enough, or not noticing/checking line for nicks/smoothness. I don't know. It's just my opinion. Palomar, improved cinch, uni. I've used them all without problem. But kudos for wanting to "improve your game." I guess I'm not much help. 1 Quote
