N.Y. Yankee Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Is the loop to loop connection ok to use to connect a mono leader to braided line or will the braid cut the mono? Can you suggest an easy knot to do this? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 18, 2017 Super User Posted May 18, 2017 I would not trust a loop connection. An Alberto knot is my preferred connection knot. 1 Quote
Yudo1 Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 I like the Alberto for braid to fluoro and uni to uni for mono to fluoro. The fg knot looks great but I'm not any good at it. Whichever you choose, just make sure you practice because they all work. It's just a matter of doing them correctly. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted May 18, 2017 Super User Posted May 18, 2017 modified albright, FG or uni for braid to mono. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted May 18, 2017 Super User Posted May 18, 2017 In a 'true' loop-to-loop connection, passing one loop thru another loop offers the integrity of a square knot. (Caveat, everything must fit thru the primary loop) If you're joining two tag ends and worried about the braid severing the monofilament, you can tie a 'doubled' uni-knot then use 8 wraps on the braid, 5 on the mono. Super User NHBull Posted May 19, 2017 Super User Posted May 19, 2017 Uni to uni for my spinning gear fg for casting. still can't get the crazy Alberto to be as dependable as the two above Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted May 19, 2017 Super User Posted May 19, 2017 Alberta or FG for me. I trust the FG more if I need as much strength as possible. Quote
Super User Further North Posted May 19, 2017 Super User Posted May 19, 2017 I use loop to loop on fly lines...don't think I'd trust one braid to mono...and with the knots used to create the loops likely being bigger than the FG or the Alberto...I don't see the attraction. Quote
Bucky205 Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 I love the FG. When I first started using the FG I had trouble tying it. The secret to the FG is the right amount of tension on the braid. I couldn't keep the braid from slipping through my teeth half the time. I found a small soft plastic key ring somewhere that is easy to hold in my teeth, I connect the braid to the key ring and drop the rod in a rod holder. Problem solved, I can tie an FG while talking to someone. 1 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted May 19, 2017 Super User Posted May 19, 2017 I like these tips for tying the FG. I can tie a killer Alberto, but the FG eludes me. I'm going to revisit that knot, and try some of the tips here. I'd really like to have that knot in my toolbox. 2 Quote

HeavyTwenty Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 I didn't like the double half hitch finish for the original FG; apparently it can come loose with slick braid and sometimes when I tightened them, it messed up my wraps. The rizzuto finish method has worked much better for me. This guy demonstrates it pretty well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5PFJefx3J0 I use this guy's method to do the wraps https://vimeo.com/161852666 I use 15-30lb braid + 20lb fluoro inshore no problems casting through micro guides. 1 Quote

HookRz Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 I like the question as is one I never thought about. I use short flouro leaders that never pass through the guides. My reason is abrasion resistance, not the "invisibility" of flouro. Naturally I don't many re-ties. Generally these spinning setups are used for light hair jigs, finesse tubes and Ned's and I have a small file snap at the terminal end for quick bait changes. I love the idea of being able to have pre-tied leaders ready to loop on. Living on Erie and catching 100 Smallies a day this time of year should make this a quick experiment. BTW. I've tried snaps pre-tied to leader ready to affix to a tiny swivel at the end of my braid. Works great for 1/4 ounce jigs but hurts sensitivity on the really light stuff. Quote
