Rock and roll lost a legend last night.Glad i got to see him play a couple times.Hands down my favorite vocalist.

Super sad.  I was lucky enough to see Soundgarden's reunion tour back in 2013.  It was at the Tower Theater here in Philly, and for those that aren't familiar, it is NOT a giant 20,000-60,000 seat arena. It's a much smaller venue, and an incredibly intimate room to see a band that really defined the 90s generation.  I won't say what the pit tickets cost, but it was some of the best money I've ever spent on music.  They played well over 3.5 hours straight and covered quite possibly every song in their entire catalogue.  There was no opening band.  There was no real set break.  The just played.  Sometimes you get chills when you know you're seeing something special.  When you play music and you spend a lot of time around it, I feel like those instances become fewer and fewer in between.  That night was one of those experiences for me.  As a band, they were excellent, but the range, tone, dynamics, and control that Chris Cornell sang with was unique and unlike anyone else.  He truly belongs up there with the likes of Freddie Mercury as dynamic, incredible, and unmistakable voices in rock and pop music history.  As is always the case with suicide, his loss is an awful tragedy for his family and those close to him.  

 

RIP to an icon gone way too soon.

He's the last of the five big names to come out of the NW scene of the late 80s to early 90s.  Two are dead of overdoses (Staley, Wood), two of suicide (Cobain, Cornell).  Being involved in a thriving music scene here in Rochester, I've seen my share loss, locally.  This one came as a surprise.  I watched him perform Black Hole Sun recently on the morning show with Charlie Rose, and thought to myself, this guy is still relevant and on the rise again.  I guess I thought wrong.

I saw him with Soundgarden for the reunion tour as well,that was amazing.Even better,I saw him solo on the Higher Truth tour at the Hanover theater in Worcester,MA.Such a small venue.His solo stuff was truly awesome.

I saw Soundgarden open for Faith No More in a small club back in the early 90s.  I don't think Badmotorfinger had been released yet.

I wanna say Voivod was the actual headliner?  I can't remember.  I might be combining two shows, because I distinctly remember my friends' band, Pressurehead, opening for Faith No More at the same club.

There were a lot of breaking acts back then.  Also saw Primus open for 24/7 Spies.

So, it's looking like anti-depressant meds likely played a big role.  He was taking Ativan, and by the sounds of it, too much.  Man, it's amazing.  Legal drugs are a whole lot worse than a lot of the illegal ones. Not going to put this entirely on drug companies, but it's remarkable that the guy survived years of alcoholism and opioid dependency to fall apart on anti-anxiety meds.

Just saw the story in Rolling Stone.  So tragic.  My opinion is that while the legal drugs play a huge part, I don't feel like there's enough care given when they are prescribed to treat a mental illness.  Here's your pills, see me next week, if at all.

I think that this is often the case. That said, this is still a country that still largely condemns marijuana use, but a major surgery or bout with mental illness will land you a lifetime supply of opioids, anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medicine.

I saw that show at a tiny club in boston. Love faith no more, one of my favorites.

Mental health care in this country is a complete joke. The only way to get decent help for mental health is through private counseling, etc. And who can afford that when insurance isn't involved. Although you would think Chris Cornell could've afforded it. 

 

Soundgarden is prob my fav band from the Seattle 90s scene. Pearl Jam 2nd. Really sad cause Cornell could sing like no tomorrow. I've been listening to Lithium channel last 2 days & they've been playing a lot of Cornell's stuff. Today they were playing some old in studio interview & Chris Cornell was playing some live acoustic sets. Incredible stuff. 

 

I hate I didn't go see Soundgarden when they played in Memphis a few weeks ago. I'm too old for Sunday night concerts at 10:30.
