Super User geo g Posted May 18, 2017 Super User Posted May 18, 2017 It happened to me twice on the same trip. My backseater was fixing his line and extended his rod forward toward the front of the boat. I was casting and had my back to his rod. My line caught him two times, with two different rods. It really would not bother me much, but these two rods were spooled with Berkley Professional Grade Floro. These could not be picked out, but were professional grade bird nests, LOL. Big money for me! He did offer to pay for my line, but I just told him to forget it. Backseaters need to know where their equipment is, when someone up front is casting. We don't have eyes in the back of our heads. It bothered me for a while, but that's just part of fishing. In the whole scheme of things, it's just not a big deal. Accidents will happen from time to time, and he is a friend. ! 1 Quote
M Bruns Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Last/first time it happened was last night. Fishing a buzzbait around a small pond when it nailed a patch of grass causing the mother of all backlashes. After cutting all of it out, I only had enough line left to make short casts. I made the most of it and still caught a few fish. 1 Quote
lonnie g Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 i have hooked a few weeds /briars. kind of like unfolding one of those old road maps , hey just cant be fixed.is that why they are making longer rods and multiple choices on line, cause they know that we all are eventually gonna do it. 2 Quote
Lures'n'Liberty Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 Every single trip I've ever taken with a baitcast reel. I switched to closed face and haven't looked back. 2 Quote
SuperCorona Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 It usually happens once a trip with my son. He likes to move around a lot in the boat and sometimes I lose track of him and his rod. We have had some classic tangles. One time his line ended up through a split ring on my jerkbait, plus my reel looked like a bloomin' onion. A few weeks ago my wife picked up my spinnerbait rod and threw a 30 minute backlash. 1 Quote

I pack it up and go home. Yes. I get a wicked one like that every couple weeks.. it sucks. I usually give it to my girlfriend with a pair of scissors and tell her dont come back to me til it's fixed and respooled.. *mic drop* Quote
scbassin Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 Catt now that is funny. 7 to 1 I bet your grandson's hat don't fit now. Quote
hawgenvy Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 It was two weeks ago. Naturally, I had just spooled on some fresh #17 fluorocarbon before heading to the lake with the one rod for a short evening outing. I executed a perfect hookset, driving my jig into a fat bass that I cajoled out from the mouth of a big metal pipe. I knew I had her pinned solidly, and after a short battle I decided to flip her into the boat. As I lifted up on the fish, somehow my thumb pressed the cast button. I nearly tossed my rod into the air when the big weight of fish suddenly vanished, and as my jaw dropped in shock the spool exploded into a gigantic mess that I realized could be only remedied later, and only by knife. I had to hand-line the line back. To my surprise the fish was still there. I tossed her back in and went home -- feeling, since I had at least landed a fat fish, only half defeated. 1 Quote
Bruce424 Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Oh a week ago... I got the knife, scissors and pliers. Then I accidentally scraped the spool on my new reel? Quote
Bucky205 Posted November 3, 2017 Posted November 3, 2017 LOL, Is this a trick question? I love to skip jigs under docks, only got one good eye so my depth perception is a little off. Skipping when you catch a pylon, or skip to high and hit the dock can get ugly. Sometimes the jig hits the water wrong on the first bounce the spool is humming and the jig comes to a dead stop. I use inexpensive mono on it for skipping because I know it's going to happen. It gets re-spooled at least once a month after I've cut out so much line that it doesn't skip well anymore. So it was probably the last time I fished which was Sunday. Quote
