Y'all had a backlash so bad ya had to get the knife out?

 

My grandson & I were on the bayou this afternoon, he had me down 2-1.

 

I decided to make a long over head cast but misjudged an overhanging tree limb...instant backlash!

 

Now I'm one who keeps his thumb in close contact with the spool feeling for stray line. What I felt was line all around my thumb!

 

One look & I knew it was knife time, not only knife time but I had to cut it down to the spool.

 

To make matters worse I had just re-spooled yesterday & Aiden ended up 7-1!

It happens to us all. I had one last year when I saw a fish hit a insect on the top of the water. In my excited haste I tried to make a quick cast there and swung the lure too low, hitting the inside of my canoe with the bait which caused a monstrous backlash that still haunts my dreams. I just put the rod and reel down and picked up the spinning gear and humbly admitted defeat for that day.

My Last Cast of my last trip - that's how I knew it was time to go . . . . . . 

My bait clipped a GroPro mount on the 'launch.  Reel Blew Up.

I made the 'are you kidding' me face, unceremoniously 'placed' the rig in the rod locker & went home.

Tried unsuccessfully to pick it out the next day but eventually ended up taking the scissors to the spool which resulted in 12lb flouro all over the garage floor.

Haven't had one that I can remember in a long time. Now back when I bank fished a lot, tall weeds and overhanging trees got me plenty of times.

Last fall walking the bank.  I didn't look to see what was around me, and the t-rig got caught in a small bush as I was casting out.  I just put that rig back in the car.

My wife Carol walked up on the bridge above us & asked "dang Tommy what happened?" 

 

Before I could open my mouth Aiden yells "operator error"!

I thought that only happened with me, now I don't feel bad anymore lol.

Last week.

 

Had to take the baitcaster off the rod, put it on a Berkley spooling station and using my Boomerang tool cut it out.

 

Then put new line on the baitcaster and am ready to rock and roll.

 

What caused the disaster was my not seeing the pine branch above the dock when I swung for the opposite bank using an overhead cast.

 

It was one heck of a bird's nest if I do say so myself.

At a tournament.

My boater had a " bay boat" the kind a lot of salt water fisherman have down here with a center console that has rod holders on both sides. The rods are stored vertically and there is no rear deck.

 I couldn't make a side arm cast all day without going to the far corner and looking behind me, bring the lure almost to the tip to start my back swing which of course severely limited casting distance. 

 

So I was throwing over head bomb cast's all day but this one time I forgot about his rods sticking up 7ft in the air, 5 ft from me and...Bam!

I hit a rod, the spinnerbait hook latched onto the line of one his which pulled it out of the holder!

His rod almost went overboard if it wasn't for the hook holding it in. 

 

About a 1/4 of my spool exploded!

Unfortunately it was getting dark so I had the cameras off.

But even if they had been on, after the family friendly edit, the video would have been a 'Beep" fest.

Or perhaps even better, I could over lay the "Agony of Defeat" sound bite.

Last year for me. I had my 6 year old with me. He and I decided to cast at the same time and we got tangled behind us. Biggest nest I've ever had. Tried at least 15 times to get it out. Watched a YouTube video "guaranteed to get out a backlash" suckered me in....it didn't work, think it made it worse!

Backlashes and tangles that require cutting and retying are God's way of telling me fishing is over for the day.

 

I pack it up and go home.

I once had a backlash so bad it grabbed me and took me in with it.  I had to have someone ELSE get a knife and cut me loose!

Yeah the wife, I remember that. Happened to me as well. I set her up with one of my baitcaster with all tension set for her to not get a backlash. She said with very proud voice "see it isn't that difficult at all" then the day progress some how she grabbed my 50e and cast out. She handed me the reel with very beautiful smile and a big backlash on my reel.

Been a long time....but, I use braid on all my baitcasters except for two crank rods.  I've never had to cut a braid backlash out.  And my cranking casts are generally 'safer'...towards open-ish water, good weighted lures, rarely overpowered casts.   But, that said....I'm due

Last summer. Walking around a pond that had only ONE small tree by it and I wasn't paying attention since all the rest of the pond was clear and then suddenly whammo I found myself staring at a awful backlash that just sneered at me and dared me to attempt to get it out. It won.

3 weeks or so ago?As a bank fisher it comes with the territory.Sometimes all you catch that day is a branch.I Never cast overhand from the banks.

Happened to me a couple weeks ago, which was the first time in about 4 years. I too misjudged the distance of an overhanging tree.

On occasion and It most certainly Is operator error. The last bad one was taking a short trip to a local pond and a total lack of attention. I carry two rods on trips like this because I know It's going to happen. I rarely fish from the shore in these ponds and that's why. 

 

My wife loves that particular pond and usually wants to go there once every two weeks. To say she gets a big kick out of seeing a champion of a backlash Is an understatement.

Last year, made a roll cast and the lure clipped the water right at my feet as I let my thumb off the spool. A full spool of Sniper down the drain. If it's braid I can pretty much always get it out, mono or fluoro not so much.

No backlashes that bad, but i managed to hit a tree twice in 10 minutes of bank fishing. Long story short half of that trip was spent picking out birds nets as I only had one pole.
