Bummer on the water, lost equipment

So I've been getting one of my buddies into bass fishing this year and we've been going out a lot but with limited success. I let him use one of my kayaks and a bunch of my tackle to help get him going. Well we finally hit a homerun this sunday and had a chance to just wear the bass out on one of my local lakes. As we were paddling to a new spot across the lake I look up and realize he is cutting in front of me and I am about to slam right into him. So I dig my paddle hard into the water to turn me and stop and capsize almost immediately. Somehow in the scramble I get out (sit in kayak), get my phone out off my pocket (its waterproof but still) secure my sunglasses (Costas) grab the paddle my tacklebag (thankfully a backpack so I could put it over my shoulder) and one of my rod/reels in my mouth. Im borderline panicking trying to swim with all this crap in my mouth and get to shore, dump it and go back to the sinking kayak. I was able to get that back to shore too (barley) after a tough swim. In the catastrophe I ended up loosing my scale, ruler, net and one rod/reel combo (my t-rig, jig set up  ). Spent  few hours casting and trying to dive around where I fell but had zero luck. Oh well Im glad I made it to shore safe with as much as I did, but the wife already told me she will not be allowing me to replace my lost gear anytime soon  Makes this weekends upcoming tourny much more difficult. 

Anyway, I was just sharing to allow yall to laugh at my misfortune, or learn something- wear your pfd-

I knocked my glasses off in about 8 foot of water one day and immediately tossed a marker buoy .  Got them on the first dive .

It could've been a lot worse, and I'm happy you are home safe.

Just chalk it up to a learning experience, there will be more to come

Lost gear vs. lost life. I'll take lost gear any day.

 

Eldest son and I capsized our canoe and lost a brand

new cell phone, $350 camera, and more. But we survived

and lived to tell the tale  So have you.

Sounds like the weight limit on the kayak was exceeded, might want to check on that. Glad no one got hurt!

I flipped my yak last year. Lost my cell phone, Garmin Virb Elite and camera mount, 3 rods and reels, pliers, a few loose lures, and a terminal tackle box. I was able to recover a couple of rods, but ended up not being able to recover most of my gear due to the standing timber I was in at the time. It was late March with water temps in the high 40's/low 50's, so it could have been a lot worse.

 

If you were in an area with fairly open water and you have a good idea where the rod was, buy a chain stringer (the one with all the metal clips), open all of the clips and start dragging it around where you think the rod went over. I've seen several rods recovered like that.

gears is replaceable but not yourself. I know it is not gonna happen quick keep begging, nagging she will give in soon enough.

I'm glad that you're okay.  That incident could have ended in tragedy.  Always wear your PFD.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

 

Wearing your PFD lesson is a good one. A secondary smaller lesson would be to pack light for these types of trips. Less gear with you means less gear lost if an accident occurs.
