connorwallin Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 I'm in the market for a new reel and have only used Lews before but I have heard so many things about the curado. Honestly, both have me hard to beat. Does anyone have experience with both? Any noticeable pros or cons of either of them? Also, I hear the older curados are better than the new ones? (excuse my lack of knowledge with shimano reels) Any help would be greatly appreciated! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 13, 2017 Global Moderator Posted May 13, 2017 Ford vs Chevy. Best thing is to get somewhere you can handle both and figure out which feels best to you. Both make great reels, but it doesn't matter how great a reel is if it doesn't feel good in your hands. 2 Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted May 13, 2017 Super User Posted May 13, 2017 Two great reels. No wrong answer really, and to each their own. If it was my money I'd do the Shimano shimmy tho. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 On paper the Shimano is the better design due mainly to bearing supported pinion. On the water performance is pretty comparable. Longevity wise Shimano probably has an edge especially if maintenance is marginal. Neither is junk by any means. 3 Quote
MDbassin Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 They both perform almost identical and are great reels. I tend to pick up my curado more tho because it feels better in my hand but that's personal preference there you might like the way the lews fits in your hand better. Quote

This is the one your talking about correct? I get confused over people talking about the older ones and different number ones. http://www.basspro.com/Shimano-Curado-I-Series-Baitcast-Reel/product/13112808013242/?hvarAID=shopping_googleproductextensions Quote

BrianSnat Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 I have both and both are excellent reels. I give the edge to the Curado though. The only downside is that it is more expensive than he MB, so if money is an issue I would go with the Lews. Quote

Super User RoLo Posted May 14, 2017 Super User Posted May 14, 2017 During the 1970s and 80s I was heavy into saltwater fishing and was using both Daiwa and Shimano reels (plus Penn & Newell). I started out totally unbiased, but now it's many years and many reels later, and now I'm biased in favor of Shimano (after the fact, not before the fact). Roger 1 Quote

Super User iceintheveins Posted May 15, 2017 Super User Posted May 15, 2017 Another vote for the Curado, but I hear good things about the Lew's MB. As the others have said, if you are a little shorter on money, go with the Lew's. Quote
RMax Posted May 15, 2017 Posted May 15, 2017 1. Should I wait for the probable new Curado's? 2. What is better, the 200 or the 70? For bottom contact lures. (I know the 70 is primarily a jerkbait reel) Quote

It does fish a finesse jig and T rig great though. I agree with @Dramer77, I had some 200 I's, but I like the 70 much better. I've sold all my 200's but kept the 70. Quote

Very smooth, my casting and accuracy seem to be much better (even though that might just be in my head) but it's a fantastic reel. Coming from a $70 Lews reel. It fits perfect in my hand and the build quality feels very good. Overall, I'm very happy with purchase. Quote

Super User Oregon Native Posted May 28, 2017 Super User Posted May 28, 2017 I have used Shimano baitcasters for years....mostly the older white colored Chronarch's and the original green Curado's. OH....I do have a couple Chronarch mags that are amazing too. Most would be considered antiques but with Reel X out west and I try to keep some cleaning and oil and lube on them. They still all work and are dependable. Enjoy Quote
