I just bought the baitcasting reel I basically put it on my old berkley Cherrywood so I probably need to upgrade the rod. I use bait casting for mainly spinnerbait, buzz bait, and really anything I can put on it. and then I have a South Bend spinner with 8 pd that I Texas rig culprit worms. 1 hour ago, RoLo said: "Any suggestions?" Get out there and give it heck I been fishing 7 times within past 2 weeks only have caught 2 1lb bass Quote

It might be a low cost combo, but I wouldn't call it junk. The Silver Max is often suggested as a low cost option for a first time user not wanting to spend much money. I've had good luck with the few Berkley rods I've used. May have even used a Cherrywood back in the day. Just don't expect to feel a fish breathe on the lure as it passes by him/her. 1 Quote

Well that depends on how much you want to spend. I can say I really like my fenwick hmg, it runs $99. If you're wanting something a little less maybe a Berkley Lightning shock rod. I have no personal experience with them but many members here recommend them. 3 Quote

I been fishing 7 times within past 2 weeks only have caught 2 1lb bass I don't see the need for you to upgrade the rod for right now. Your cherrywood is good for those spinnerbait buzz bait. It might not be as sensitive as expensive rod but if you know how to palm your reel and let the line sit on top of your index finger you can feel every d**n thing. My suggestion is to go out there and fish the hell out of it, your money can go toward other lures, like Senko, fat ika and fluke or drop shot weight and plastic. you fish 7 times and only caught 2, I fish for 5-7 years on-off and caught less than 5. Nothing wrong with your setup you just need to try different thing or location. 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 12, 2017 Super User Posted May 12, 2017 Carbine? If you mean fluorocarbon then I don't see the need especially for spinner bait type lure. 12 or 14lbs test is also good for your reel which can hold 140yds of 12lb test. I'm not an expert about fishing line so other might be more helpful. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 12, 2017 Super User Posted May 12, 2017 I'm no expert either. I use 12# mono or co-polymer on the vast majority of my MH rods. Works fine for me. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted May 12, 2017 Global Moderator Posted May 12, 2017 Don't over think it. Use what you have until you can or want to upgrade, but for what you use it for you're good. Just go fishing as often as you can, pay attention to what you're doing and when, how and where you're successful. Relax and have fun. Mike 2 Quote
Jartbek Posted May 12, 2017 Author Posted May 12, 2017 Thanks I appreciate it i usually do overthink things ready to get out there again Quote
Fisher-O-men Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 I prefer a longer barrel... wait how did we start talking about guns??? 3 Quote
Jartbek Posted May 12, 2017 Author Posted May 12, 2017 Haha just the normal newbie mistake is all. 1 Quote
frosty Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 Don't worry about it, carbines serve a purpose, in fact I prefer a carbine unless the fish are really deep, then I use the long barrel to really reach out and touch them 2 Quote
BrianSnat Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 If your Cherrywood is a spinning rod, you probably would be best off buying a baitcasting rod. Conider the Berkley Lightning or Lightning Shock, or for a little more money a Shimano Clarus or a Fenwick HMX or HMG. Quote
Jartbek Posted May 13, 2017 Author Posted May 13, 2017 Cherrywood is a casting rod I might upgrade next year. 1 Quote
Dinger0306 Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 Don't worry about upgrading your rod.. like someone else said go out there and give it hell! I learned a baitcaster on a 6 1/2' M Cherrywood rod. I fished it for 2-3yrs until I could afford a better rod. I'd be lying if I told you that the difference between a $25 rod and a $100 rod isn't that large (it most definitely is) but I caught a lot of fish and had a blast usin' it. ?? 1 Quote
Jartbek Posted May 14, 2017 Author Posted May 14, 2017 Thanks hopefully going white bass fishing Monday heard it's feeding time for them on minnows Quote
BrianSnat Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 It's not a bad rod, no reason to upgrade right away. 1 Quote
