HawkeyeSmallie Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 So what's the secret to fishing this dumb expensive lure? Sometimes on a steady retrieve it doesn't even plop. I've only tried it a couple times, both on like 14 or so pound mono. Would braid help since it floats? I guess I could throw it on my frog rod. Braid? Rod tip real high? How are you guys fishing this thing? Also steady retrieve or a pause and jerk type action? Probably both huh? Thanks! Quote
blckshirt98 Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 Check to make sure there aren't any weeds or debris in the tail where it spins, sometimes I'll get moss in there and I"ll need to clean it out at home. Also what size are you using? The smaller ones you need to reel in faster to get the tail to start moving. As for retrieve I always just go slow and steady once you find the reel speed to get the tail buzzing. Quote
HawkeyeSmallie Posted May 11, 2017 Author Posted May 11, 2017 Thanks for the reply. I have both sizes but have only used the smaller one. I'll try them more when the water warms up. Quote
brent245 Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 I Use 20lb braid, some use 25+lb. I know people will argue not to use braid with trebles but I've never had an issue. I think you need braid because of the way you fish these. I fish close to heavy cover, close to the shoreline, sometimes at night. I don't want to lose the lure in a fallen tree branch or in a clump of algae. If you get snagged on something you need that braid. I've found hooksets are not really needed anyway, the fish are hitting a moving bait and their squirming sets the hook along with continued reeling. Either the fish hook themselves or they missed the lure. In which case if they miss it, stop and give it some twitches, hopefully they hit again. Keep moving to different spots, then backtrack back to where you started, casting parallel to shorelines and in/around heavy cover or structure. I've found if you fish one spot too much, the fish just don't bite. Fish somewhere else and then return 30 minutes later and you'll probably get a hit right away. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 11, 2017 Super User Posted May 11, 2017 Braid would help but you can still using mono not FC line make sure your line is not underwater by raise the rod tip high. Crank faster if it is still non spin. Normally with any top water I will cast far out then steady retrieve. Once the lure is in strike/target zone I'll slow down by pause and retrieve. Quote
CTBassin860 Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 someone bought the 90 So i had the same issue with the 90.At a seminar I attended,I asked Chris Lane himself about it.He told me to throw it on a longer rod.Not sure how that make any difference.Wait a couple seconds to let the bait float on top before reeling and keep it away from weeds. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 13, 2017 Global Moderator Posted May 13, 2017 I fish the 90 on a 7' M/F rod with 20lb braid. Hold the rod tip high and make sure to start cranking as soon as it hits the water. Nice thing with the braid is I just reel into the strikes, keeps me from jerking it away from the fish. Quote

I tied the 90 on my jig rod throwing 15 pound flouro. Just keep the rod rip high and it will plopp. Quote
