Fishin Maniac Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Hey, any super good recommendations on a heavy cover and frog fishing reel in a budget 100-325$ and matched with st croix avid x 7'4 rod heavy fast action and if you dont think thats a goood rod i can buy a different rod in the 100- 400 dollar range? The Reel and rod is also for flippin pitchin and froggin. I have a high budget so throw them at me. Also i want them to look good together doesnt have to match but look good. Thanks - The Fishin Maniac Quote
Yudo1 Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 A lot of choices with that price range: megabass xx perfect pitch, destroyer valdiva, dobyns champion 735c, alx toadface, klx are a few good choices. 1 Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted May 10, 2017 Super User Posted May 10, 2017 My frog combo works very well and it is made up of a left handed Daiwa Tatula Type R 8-1 reel. I also own several right handed Type Rs and Tatula CTs as well. I own a total of 7 Daiwa Tatulas. Any of the Tatula series reels are really nice including the new Tatula SV TWS which is the newest version. My rod is a Dobyns Champion series rod. It is a 7 foot model DC 705C. This is a great rod, but their best rod for frogging, and lots more, is the DC735C. The 735 is not just 3 inches longer, but has a bit different taper. I knew this, but can not fit it in my rod locker. Quote
Fishin Maniac Posted May 10, 2017 Author Posted May 10, 2017 So if i get the st avid x 7'4 heavy fast action do you think thats a good rod for frogging and pitchin and flippin? Also any other branded reels like abu garcia or shimano with good really strong drag systems and power for flipping and pitchin and frogging? Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted May 10, 2017 Super User Posted May 10, 2017 That Avid X should work great for your needs. As for reels, check out the Exsence DC from Shimano. It's pretty much the ultimate frogging reel. I have one and it works great for frogging, flipping, and swim jigs. Quote

I have the LTB version of this rod and do exactly what you are asking about with it. In fact, I find it much better for my pitching and flipping than I do for frogs. I only got the LTB because the price I stumbled upon at eBay was below the cost of an Avid. As far as the reel goes I have an OG Zillion on mine. I love this combo so much. Quote
RichF Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 That Avid X was made for froggin. It will also work great as a pitchin stick. A JDM Daiwa Zillion SV XXH would look pretty sweet on that rod. Its green accents would pair nicely. Quote
Clinton john Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Lews super duty paired to a Powell inferno 7'3" Heavy action fast tip has been doing frog work and punching mats for me on Toledo Bend for three years and can't think how I could improve on what I have. 1 Quote
d-camarena Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Whatever rod you end up using. But for reel id also recommend the lews superduty. Beast of a reel. I have 3 and they are strong. Built for flippin, frogging and punching. I even throw hudds on mine Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted May 10, 2017 Super User Posted May 10, 2017 I love my Dobyns Champion but my second choice would be the Irod Genesis II Fred's Magic Stick. Finnz922 gave you a very good suggestion. After years of fishing with many brands I have really come to like the Dobyns Irods and Powell rods best. Quote
kstephes033 Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Megabass Perfect Pitch or Daiwa Tatula Elite 7'4" Heavy and a Daiwa Steez TW A with either. Otherwise the Tatula CT Type R would be my next bet for reel. Quote
SFL BassHunter Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 The Daiwa Tatula 7'4" Frog Rod is fantastic. I really enjoy using it. 4.0oz, so it is light! Though its a little tip heavy with my 5.6oz Lews team lite on it. Quote
