Closing on a new house in July and was wondering if anyone had any ideas or stuff they’ve successfully used in the past for garage layouts?

My brother in law just did his with a lot of cabinets but I don’t know if I’m crazy about those. I guess I don’t really see the benefit of cabinets over traditional shelving? Cleaner look I guess?  I won't be painting or woodworking a lot so not too worried about needing cabinets to keep stuff pristine.

The ceiling will be 12' high as well so really interested in overhead storage options.

Anyways, any ideas or layouts you have used would be appreciated.

Simple, braced shelves up high for Rubbermaid bins should do well.  Workbench below.

We are using plastic rack shelving along one wall, and a peg board (with metal hooks) on the other over top of the work desk in the spare room. I still haven't gotten into sorting out the bigger of the two sheds for storing tackle, but that will probably need airtight containers due to critters.

My future father in law has hooks on the ceiling to hang rods, and that works, but it's only an 8' ceiling. He also has a rack which holds about a dozen 3600 boxes, which is plenty enough once he loads the boat for the season.

My father still has a bunch of old filing cabinets from a school sale in the early eighties that work well if you keep things organized.

If you find a store going out of business and can get a few of the pegboard style stands they are awesome (but you have to have the space for them)

I'm about to go to the hardware store this afternoon to get lumber to build a workbench in my new garage.  There's some great designs online you can google for shelving and workbenches.  I'm planning to install some shelving such as the simple braced ones described above as well to store things out of the way.

I also ordered metal pegboard from amazon I'm planning to install soon behind where the workbench will be.  That will be for tools and extra fishing gear.

The house we bought in Florida has upper and lower cabinets on one side of the garage. I HATE those things? No way can I get a 2nd car in their with those cabinets taking up so much room.  Plus, they make the garage feel so small.

I would rather have nice wire shelving that runs the length of the garage and at a height that wouldn't be in the way.

This is an interesting topic.  A lot of my neighbors park their cars outside because their garages are already full of stuff (whether that be lawn mowers, trash/recycle bins, snow blowers, or just junk).  The biggest space saver in my own garage is the ability to get as much stuff off the ground as you can.  Put your bikes on over head hangers, get all your tools on hooks, etc.  Being organized will pay off in the long run because eventually you will probably just need more and more space anyways.

We installed new kitchen cabinets when we moved into our house.  Some of the original overhead cabinets went in the basement and in the garage.

@lonnie gthat is very owesome work man.

Our old house have an overhead garage storage almost the whole length of 3 car garage and keep the floor clean, where we normally park 2 car and a motorcycle. I also built movable wood bench where I can move between garage and backyard. I missed that storage space it is about 3 feet down from ceiling and from wall all the way to garage door opener.

This new house we have one of those white cheap cabinet. It look nice and clean but always in the way and not a lot of storage space so I got two of those wire 4'x8' overhead storage from Costco and installed it for all boxes and such. Now we can only park 1 car, 1 golf cart and my boat with 2 kayaks on top.

i was lucky enough to score a bunch of Rubbermaid materials from my previous job.  i took advantage of that with the garage fasttrack stuff they have as well as the fasttrack closet materials and then got the heavy duty shelving.  they work well for keeping all the work samples that my wife has to keep on hand neatly organized.
