Is the Daiwa Z finally outdated??

With Daiwa's new line-up of SV reels has the TD-Z finally reached a point where it can't be tweaked and tuned to a point that it's the equal of today's reels? My gut says probably yes. Up until a couple years ago I think you could build a Z to be better then any Tatula or New Zillion but with the SV's being as good as they are out of the box it just isn't worth it any more. No doubt the Z is a classic and I'll still use mine but maybe it's showing its age.

The 100, Maybe, but the spool is still very good. The 103 or 105 can just get an sv spool themselves.

My experience with an SV reel is limited to one.  Quite frankly it sucked out of the box.  If that was the end of the story, I'd have to say the SV can't hold a candle to the Z.  I sent it to a reel (real ? ) specialist.  Only had it out once since getting it back, but can tell it works much better now.  It will take more use before I can determine if it is better...or as good as...my Z reels.  I realize this is blasphemy as everyone else has nothing but high praise for the SV spools.  Please don't burn me at the stake.

My tdz's with r+ spools still outcast all my other reels.  They also out pitch everything else. I have hedge hog airs, carbontex and carbon fiber handles and I will never get rid of them.  They are still refined and smooth. I'm still looking for a mint ito or personal order. If I want to go finesse I can pop in any number of  shallow spools or an sv spool.

TD-Z/Fuego...my all time favorite.  A well built Fuego/TD-Z will NEVER be outdated! I'm always looking for a nice Fuego.

I honestly hope they never will be outdated either. I've had several SV reels and haven't been ready to say they are the best ever. What got me on this topic is the Tatula SV I just started using, it will outcast any of my Z's and they all have hedgehog or Boca bearings and a couple have R+ spools. Will the Tat be going strong in 15 years like a Z?? Who knows. Really just trying to start a topic NOT about Kastking!

If we could only find someone like a mom and pops sporting goods store owner with a bunch of forgotten TDZ's , TD Fuegos and OG Zillions.  What a find that would be.

With as many spool options you have for a Tdz you can make it do anything you want to. Same goes for handles,ccc, and drag stars. You have endless options to make it look and perform any way possible. The reel is a classic and isn't going to die anytime soon. It's old for sure, but still better than any tatula you're going to buy. Paint doesn't hold up the best but that's more reason to get it painted and make it even more your own.

I do not disagree with this.  All of the Tatula models are excellent performers in my opinion, and I have not used the new SV yet.

I'm not much into knobs, handles n'stuff, but spools for the reel it's another story, I've purchased a couple of SV spools and a Steez spool ( now I have that Type R+ I was never able to purchase ).

True!  Now we need to get places like TW to stop calling them "Daiwa Tatula SV TWS Casting Reels" and start calling them "Daiwa Tatula TWS Casting Reels with an SV Spool".

The great thing about Daiwa. Plug an SV spool made last month into a reel made 15-20 years ago. I just took the SV spool out of my SS SV and swapped it with Gigas in a Z-103. 

The SS SV is now a lot more free casting, haven't tried the Z with the SV yet

I am looking at putting three different spools in my SS SV just to try:  TD-Z 103, Steez 103SH, and a Steez 103SHA...any idea which one will work the best?  I know the 103SHA will match the color of the reel accents (red with 7:1).

Actually I think they are all going to be pretty similar. I've put the Steez spool in Z's a couple times and didn't notice much difference. I think the RC 1016 would be a nice fit for the SS SV. Kind of hard to find now

I mentioned the color difference to match the reel accents .  I also have other SV and non reels that will gladly accept these spools as I see fit.  I was simply asking a question.

I will customize a used TD-Z before I buy anything on the market right now except for an SV 103 or Steez SV TW. The form factor and endless customizations are unmatched. Not to mention the reels are just smooth as butter and the R+ spool is one of the best spools that's ever been produced. I will also put a TD-Z type R + spool in anything I'm using to cast and not pitching/skip over any spool on the market every time. That spool is just flat out awesome. For pitching/skipping I like the Steez SV TW and Steez SV.

So here's another question, how would a Steez spool (103SH and 103SHA (the same spool different color)) perform in one of my SV103 reels?  Aren't those spools the same as the R+ just different cosmetics?  Would I essentially have an aluminum TD-Z R+?  Thanks!

Oops, Sh or Sha spools would be pretty cool in an SS SV. It's the HA spool I was thinking of that is similar to the Z spool. I think you'd be making a Steez with a few less bearings, kind of like sticking a TDZ-100 Spool in a Fuego. Which makes a killer reel!

Your post clearly says you have 3 spools to try and then you proceed to ask which one will work best. Making no mention of knowing 2 are the exact same. Only that the red would match the reels accents. Add to it that you seem uneducated on things Daiwa wise between the questions you post on the two popular sites. So yes, I pointed out 2 are the exact same in case you weren't aware. You should take some time one day and test them. First hand experience is going to give you a better answer than anyone on a forum. Also some people have different opinions on certain spools/reels/ect and what they like you might not. For example the Steez 103 spool with the R+ inductor is considered pretty wild in a 1st gen Steez. To most that's not exactly preferred. To others it's not all that bad.

Thanks for the input on the spools.  Glad that you're reading my posts on here and on the other popular site...but calling me uneducated on things Daiwa is a not correct.  Maybe I read your post wrong but most of your answers come off as rather blunt even if the intent in not there...so I apologize if I took anything the wrong way.  I value your opinions on tackle and thank you for any further help you provide on this forum and any others.
