Spinerbait58 Posted February 15, 2017 Posted February 15, 2017 My thought is Cabela's really was known For there Hunting supply's there clothing is outstanding Gun's ammo They have that covered also, Bass Pro was marketed to Bass fishing.Johnny Morris started selling Tackei out of his father's liquor store, and look where he's at now. With those two Giant retailer's don't leave much for anyone else. I always try to support local shops ,But they can't carry the selection that we like to see, The internet is so convienent get what ever you need at a push of a button .Gander Mt was late to the party.Just my thought's Quote
BassThumb Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Gander Mountain is basically an overpriced clothing store that devotes 1/4 of the store to fishing and hunting, which they still do pretty well. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted March 2, 2017 Super User Posted March 2, 2017 Know why Gander, Cabela's and Bass Pro carry so much clothing? It's because there is a lot more profit in clothing than fishing tackle. Without clothing, they would all still be small shops nobody heard of. 2 Quote

Yeah, you know what makes more $ for sporting goods retailers than most anything else? Socks, and of those, the basic 10 packs more so than the performance copper enhanced, ultra weave recovery enhancing premium single cards. The same reason why if given a choice Ugly Stiks stay, and NRXs go. It's not sexy. Quote

All our clothing was at least 100% markup. Quote

thebillsman Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 They'll probably raise their prices even higher in lieu of it. Quote
greentrout Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 Retail in most industries is taking a beating. The big malls with brick & mortar are in big trouble. New pricing strategies & on site aggressive store management to bend the cost curve down is needed. Yesterday, walking into an Academy saw a sign out front before walking in stating they would beat any competitors' price like a Wal Mart ad. The big box boys are in big trouble. Personally, buy more and more from on-line & use Amazon, too. My 2 cents. Quote
OperationEagle Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 Poor store help, poor selection, most always have to wait for someone to come to man the register at check out, poor inventory... Retail is ruthless to begin with...but add in poorly managed operations and an undifferentiated market position...this is what you get. The only thing that is surprising to me is how long they lasted. 1 Quote
blckshirt98 Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 It looks like Gander is liquidating - https://www.aol.com/article/finance/2017/05/02/gander-mountain-is-closing-down-a-bunch-of-stores/22066240/ Get on those deals! Quote

I went to so called store closing sale, some items were only 20% off. Typical Gander, no wonder they closing. 1 Quote

They're closing all over the place. The one closest to me shut down and sent all their returned/damaged goods to an auction. I went to it and managed to get a couple sweet deals. Quote
ScottDB Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 I'm pretty sure the only location around me is closing down as well. I haven't shopped for fishing gear online yet I have to hold it and look at it before I buy it. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted May 3, 2017 Super User Posted May 3, 2017 They've already closed down 3 stores here in Pittsburgh months ago. Those 20% prices will soon become 30-40-50-60-75%. The thing is the selection gets smaller and smaller as that discount gets bigger. And no returns either, so don't think you'll buy at 20% off and then swap it out once it's at 75%. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted May 3, 2017 Super User Posted May 3, 2017 Camping World bought Gander Mountain. They will keep 17 stores, maybe more depending on how profitable the stores are. You can google it for more information. Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted May 5, 2017 Super User Posted May 5, 2017 Gander was one of my first exposures to large(r) sporting goods stores and as such, I HAD a certain amount of loyalty to the company. But that waned over time. They really didn't seem to care if they were competitive or not. The store near me was empty most of the time and when I commented on it to an employee, she said they made most of their money at Christmas and mostly on their firearms. (?). If that is the case, why have all the additional overhead? I'm surprised "my" store lasted as long as it did. Quote

Bass & Boilermakers Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 Just got news that all Gander Mountains are closing nationwide. Have to imagine there will be some killer deals to be had with the going out of business sales, so I figured I'd go ahead and make a thread for everyone to post their local findings. I for one will be heading to the nearest Gander Mountain on Sunday to scope it out. Quote
gall Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 I was gonna do the same thing in sales and deals and ironically mine 15minutes away closed down almost a year ago cause lease issue so Sunday km driving 40 minutes away hoping to find some things I know the old. One near me sold everything even the mounts ha Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 They're still keeping quite a few stores open, despite going into chapter 11 bankruptcy. Not sure how that works, but here's a link to a list of stores staying open. https://mobile.twitter.com/GanderMtn Quote
dsqui Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 Handers deals by me were a joke 10% off...last week before They were closing they had 20% off. No real good deals to be found here Quote
