Chet Punisher Posted May 5, 2017 Posted May 5, 2017 So, I usually use trilene. Thought I'd try this stuff. So far I'm not so happy. It spools loosely when I reel it. I have been getting tanlges when I have never had them before. Any suggestions? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 5, 2017 Super User Posted May 5, 2017 Use a line conditioner. What pound test and which type or reel? I've got some some 12# on a casting reel I am trying and some 6# that will either go on a spinning reel or a finesse casting reel. Unfortunately I haven't used it much yet so I can't give an opinion. Hopefully smalljaw67 will see this thread and reply. I bought it after reading his opinion of the line. Pretty sure I am not having a problem like you are having, or the line would have already been removed. I have plenty of other line to replace it with if it ever gives me a problem. Not worth the hassle of fighting loose coils....should that happen. 1 Quote
Chet Punisher Posted May 5, 2017 Author Posted May 5, 2017 The reel is a President spinning reel. And the line is 14 lb... maybe that's my problem.. Might have gotten too much poundage. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 6, 2017 Super User Posted May 6, 2017 I'd have to agree that 14# is a bit much on a reel for bass. I personally wouldn't go over 10# for mono type lines. The heavier lines don't want to lay on the spool very well. You could try a line conditioner first before removing the line. It will help some. Whether enough or not I couldn't say. There are a few guys on here that are exclusively (or almost exclusively) spinning reel users. They could give you a better answer than I can. Even when I fished nothing but spinning reels I used 4-8# XL. I did use a 10# leader on one rod that was spooled with 4# so I could keep from losing lures on the cast. EDIT: If I remember correctly, smalljaw67 said the line (10#, I think) did have a bit of memory, but he was using lighter lines with no problems, and felt it was the best mono he had ever used. 2 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 6, 2017 Super User Posted May 6, 2017 I'm using that line exclusively and I can help. If you read the box, it tells you the line is optimized for casting reels but I use the 6# and 8# on spinning with no problem. I would not use 14# on a spinning reel, and the reason is that line has a lot of characteristics of fluorocarbon...Which I hate. So, if I hate fluorocarbon then why do I like the ulracast ultimate mono?? Well the abrasion resistance and knot strength is outstanding, the only cons I see after 2 solid seasons of using it is that it doesn't handle as well as regular mono but it does handle a bit better than fluorocarbon. What I do is give my spool a few spritzes of KVD line and lure, that will have the line working well all day but with 14# on a spinning reel you may have a tough time. I can tell you this, I've taken some good size smallmouth in moving water on both the 6# and 8# and never had a break off but you need the line conditioner otherwise the memory is bad but it is as thin as most fluorocarbon lines are with just as good abrasion resistance and better knot strength, I'm sold on it but I would recommend not using anything over 10# for a spinning reel. 1 Quote
Chet Punisher Posted May 6, 2017 Author Posted May 6, 2017 Thanks. I think I overshot the weight. I have ordered a new spool of a lighter weight. Thanks guys. Quote
