Diff between 12 lb Big Game and 10 lb line?

I currently have a big spool of 12# Big Game. I am wondering if 10# line (brand?) would perform materially better for lighter lures on a baitcaster.

 

i try a lot of different lines but seem to always come back to Big Game.  I keep thinking there is a better all around line that does everything I want it to do better than Big Game but I haven't found it yet.

How light are the lures. I like 6 or 8lb yo zuri for 3/8oz lures.

Between an 1/8 and 1/4 sinker weight.  Not sure what the hook and bait would add.

The difference is 2 lbs. But seriously, folks...if i was trying to cast light lures but still keep some line strength, I'd go with 10 lb. Trilene XL. That's what I used to use for deep cranking. Very good quality line. But now I use 30# braid for BC and 20# braid for spinning. I still use 15# Big Game for heavy treble lures on BC.

Are you looking for better casting distance with light lures or just more lure action with lighter line?

 

I find the best way to evaluate monofilament line is to ignore the pound test and take a look at the diameter of the line. A lot of the diameter information can be found in the description on Tackle Warehouse.

 

.015" - Big Game 12 pound test

.015" - Trilene XT 12 pound test

.013" - Trilene XL 12 pound test

.012" - Trilene Sensation 12 pound test

 

I do find I get longer casts with light lures using Sensation on a baitcaster. I suspect I also get a more natural drop with a light jig on that thinner line.

#15 big game is .015

#12 big game is .014

#10 big game is .012

A smaller diameter line is going to cast further. You need to decide on a line that offers the properties you're looking for as far as strength to diameter. I think the #10 would be fine for what you want to use it for.

Great point!  Is Sensation still sold?  I did like that line a lot.  

 

My my goal is all around performance...casting, pitching as well as I can without overruns.

 

I have never had any trouble with breakage on the 12# and just a little concerned that stepping down to 10# might result in breaking some off.  I guess that's my biggest fear with changing...that and abrasion resistance.  I fish docks a lot.

Stay with the 12#, what you give up in line diameter you'll loose in abrasion resistance & shock absorption!

Actual breaking strength is a whole nuther story. I know Trilene XT way overtests what it is rated as. The thinner the line the more of a factor even the slightest abrasion becomes.

 

My Bass Pro still carries Sensation (and it looks like they offer it online).
