I've got one of those pictures. Thought I'd tied it off but I was sweating, in a life or death struggle with my McDonald's breakfast that I was regretting eating at that point. Not sure I even parked the truck before I sprinted to the Johnny. Not another soul around to enjoy watching my boat do the slow drift across the lake in the gentle morning breeze. The recovery process was not an easy one either.

How'd you end up getting it back?  Was the water cold?

Scaring me, I had Mickey D's right before fishing this morning.  Then had some more for lunch.  I didn't touch the burritos though, dangerous stuff.

Really shallow lake and as you can see in the picture, trolling motor was down. It hit bottom about 20' from shore, water was still pretty cold. I tied together a few ratchet straps, bungee cords, and throw net ropes, and aimed for the open back battery area. Pulled it within about 10' of shore before the motor hit bottom. Climbed out in an old willow tree, that was occupied by a sleeping raccoon as I found out when he thankfully bailed and splashed down in the lake instead of fighting for his tree. Climbed out on a branch and jumped for the boat, branch broke, because willow trees aren't durable at all. Me and the branch fell half in, half out of the boat. Nothing was broken and I was only partially wet, but about 2 hours after my boat floated away, I was finally fishing. Another boat showed up about 10 minutes later.

Too bad nobody was there to record that! You could make a short movie out of that adventure.

I was by myself and nobody else was around. It was before my trip recording days. That sucker came flying out of a hollowed out spot in the tree like it was shot out of a cannon. I'm just glad he didn't decide to fight me for waking him up.

I think you could have taken him! I would imagine you’ve wrestled worse........

The raccoon does have a distinct advantage up in a tree though hahah

You mean like the naked guy covered in his own waste last night? I'd have rather tangled with the raccoon.

I need to figure how to do this on a bicycle.  In Laguna Atascosa NWR, they closed roads to vehicle traffic 15 years ago because of ocelot kills.  Now the only way to get a kayak to Rattlesnake Bay or Stover Cove is to paddle 5 miles one-way (much farther to Stover), or mothership to one of the cuts in in a power boat.

If I could work out a good bicycle trailer, could pedal the NWR roads to Red Bluff and Realitos to launch.

We've done the long paddle from Tomae park before - makes for a long day.

8BHIgEt.jpg

seriously fishy water - shallow grass and sand holes - I hooked up a sow trout that had to be 30", but she tore the hook

yodIcrw.jpg

The Arroyo is a branch of the Rio Grande delta (was the main channel 10,000 years ago), and the NWR roads couldn't possibly be more flat.  Rattlesnake Bay is on the left.

That would be a fun project!   I have a Croozer Cargo trailer for my Bianchi Axis that I used on multi-day trips.  It works very well, tows perfectly and can really haul some weight (88lb recommended limit).  Using its basic design as a template and adding an extended tongue, it seems like you could haul a light kayak...

My oldest son built a few pedal cars. One of them had enough torque to pull a trailer with a recliner mounted to it. I'm sure that would pull a kayak around just fine.

There are cargo bike trailers.  I met a guy that had worked as a bike courier (probably a lot crazier breed than the downhill crowd) in DC that brought his kayak on one of these up to Lock 6 on the Potomac https://www.bikesatwork.com/.  Besides the kayak, he had gigs retrieving garbage/recycling cans from parks and toting bulky (not necessarily heavy) things around.  The trailer looked very sturdy, and I'm assuming pretty heavy and he was pulling it with a steel framed what I'd call gravel bike.  I didn't take a picture, but did talk to the guy for a few minutes (as I have a habit of doing when I see interesting bikes around) and looked his rig over a bit.
