Box Turtles are out and about.  Quite a few of them build their nests and lay their eggs in the riverside rail trail.

Wife gave our extremely ancient cat a “sponge bath” tonight. We don’t know how old he is, adopted him two years ago and that thought he was at least 12 then. He was a fairly plump old cat then, with two frost bitten, mangled ears, but otherwise just the coolest old guy. He’s really gone downhill the last few months, pretty much just a skeleton with cat fur stretched over at this point, with one eye closed up most of the time and hardly any teeth so he drools near constantly, but he still gets around ok and doesn’t seem in any discomfort, so we just keep prodding along. This is his “happy sleeping face” after getting all cleaned up ?

These types of guys are my dad's favorite animals. He likes them gnarly. He'd kill to have a one eyed cat that drools. He's currently in the market for an English Bulldog with an attitude problem because he wants it to sit next to him on the couch drooling and PO'd when people come over.

Exactly two years ago today we took possession of this fabulous 25 acre chunk of land. As soon as the paperwork was signed to purchase it, there was talk of chickens. I’ve done a ton of projects in two years, and finally this Mother’s Day I started to build the coop. Figured after putting it off for two years, I better get going with it or I’d be sleeping in the workshop! Well, today, we finally officially became a “farm”. About the smallest farm in the world by livestock standards, but I have a happy wife and kid so job well done I guess ?

We have prepared fairly well for any type of critter we would need to worry about around here. Coop and run is very solid, fencing buried deep and no easy way for anything to get in. There are several neighbours within a few miles of us with sizeable flocks, and they’ve not had many issues with predators. We’ve also got things setup to keep rodents to a minimum. Plenty of snap traps already around to keep them out of the shop, boat etc. We don’t have a ton of mice around, it’s actually been almost a year since I’ve caught one in a trap. I grew up with quite a few chickens, as well as many other farm animals so this isn’t my first time dealing with critters.

Avian influenza is a much bigger threat to domestic poultry than a stray critter.  @Way north bass guy knows about the threat with this silent invisible killer.

Yup. Haven’t heard of any outbreaks anywhere near me at all, but we’re gonna keep things as secure as we can, and there’s not many wild birds that are ever very close at all to where the chickens will be. We don’t want to have to deal with that sort of thing at all if we can help it.

Yea my buddy that works for the fed deals with that, he travels to the Midwest and kills hundreds of thousand of them 

 

chicken coops keep people like me in business. Everything loves to eat yard bird including myself

Layers really do not have hardly meat on them though.  They're basically skin and bones.  Its the broilers that are raised to eat.

I’m a fan of eating what they lay too. And a raccoon doesn’t mind if the bird itself is lean. 
 

my favorite is when people say they need me to catch a weasel. I say well we don’t have any so that may be tricky. They say well my chickens heads are all missing, I say that’s a raccoon. They say oh no it’s a weasel, I googled it………

 

so I set a raccoon trap inside the coop and next morning there’s a raccoon in it every time. Next question they ask is always well how did it get in there??? I say well right there he is in that trap, why don’t you ask him? 
 

the internet leads people in the wrong direction most every time in my line of work. Somewhere in the google sphere it says chipmunks will cause your foundation to fall in also. If that was true, you might have built it wrong…….
