My son’s dog (standard poodle) stalked a rabbit and got this close before it noticed and this dog has done this so many times. The photo doesn’t do justice on how close we were to the rabbit.

I’m beginning to wonder if poodles aided in hunting or tracking in the past or if his ability to stalk and track are just innate in dogs generally. I’m pretty impressed and perhaps their reputation being a “rich and pampered” breed couldn’t be farther from the truth.

@islandbass, your son has a very smart hunting dog and retriever. The name poodle comes from the German word for puddle “pudle” which according to google means “to splash in the water”. Apparently, the term “French poodle” is a misnomer. In France, the breed is called Caniche, French for “duck dog”. ( sorry Labrador fans ??‍♂️).
It’s my understanding that hunters would trim their poodles coat down only leaving it in areas that would keep the dog warm or help them swim. It wasn’t until much later it became it something of a “fashion” thing.

My daughter has a Golden Doodle (3/4 poodle) and the little dood is a retrieving machine especially during pool days.

Pits are great pups @galyonj and unfortunately got a bad rap. We ran a dog rescue for years and most of the dogs and puppies were pits or pit-mix. I’ll also mention once upon a time when they were known as a Terrier, they graced the MGM record label and were a member of “Our Gang” aka the “Little Rascals”.

Yessir. Ours are great, even if they have zero respect for personal space. As soon as SWMBO's butt hits the couch, she's covered in dogs.

The dogs, I suspect, would describe this as a "feature", instead of a "bug".

My buddy that was bringing a chainsaw brought 3! And mine that I figured wouldn’t start. It starts and runs but won’t stay running, gummed carb just like we thought so that should be easy. It’s amazing how fast things go when you get the right weapons IMG-0648.jpg

@J._Bricker: Thanks for educational info! Nacho is his name and homing in on those critters is his game. Just last last I took him out on a late evening stroll. We were in a section with no light and and points his head into a dark section (zero light) of a neighbor’s lawn and stops and stares. I was thinking no way. I pull out my flashlight, aim it in the direction he’s looking and some 70’ away is a rabbit frozen in the center of my spotlight beam.

My wife wants a labra or golden doodle next. ???

I am definitely not an OF (that term sickens me) but I have quickly become a  PF (Poodle Fan) lol

What is that? A mink?

Fisher.  Much bigger than a mink, but closely related.

Gotcha. I kept fighting with myself because of how big that sucker'd be if it was a mink, but I couldn't think of a word for anything that shape and that size.

I've seen a couple in person while I was deer hunting.  They initially look like an otter, but then you realize there's more fur and an otter would not be running through the woods nowhere near any kind of water.  They are an impressive predator.

@gimruis Neat!

I think I see groundhogs more than anything else. Some otter if I'm in the right place, and, very rarely, a beaver, though we can see evidence of them all over.

There was one memorable time that one of the cats cornered a chipmunk in the house. The dogs about lost their minds with worry over that.

@galyonj last fall there was a story and photos of a hunter who encountered a fisher that has chased a cat up a power line pole.  He initially saw the cat when he drove by the pole and thought "why is that thing up there" so he turned around and then spotted the fisher on the ground.  He waited until dark (about 20 minutes) to see if the fisher would actually climb the pole and kill the cat, but it did not occur.  It may have happened after dark when he left.

Picked up a new chicken coop after snowmaggedon destroyed theirs this winter. They loaded it with a forklift and then it was quite the sight to see me, my wife and daughters unload it from her pickup. No injuries + no fight + it's still in one piece = success!

I just pretty much finished ours today. Custom built on site, and attached to our greenhouse. Couple little

touch ups and a few small things to set up and we’ll be ready for birds next weekend.
