LApanic Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 $150 bucks? Im hunting more of a swimjig specific, maybe 80/20 action, rod for swimming a jig. I'd be fishing a good amount of vegitation like hydrilla, pad/pad stems, etc but feel my current rod I use is to short (6'10") and too heavy. IDEALLY....I'd love to find good rod, with the power and action, to also frog and toss a spinnerbait, but still be a solid swim jig rod. Any help is greatly appreciated...TIA and tight lines Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted May 1, 2017 Super User Posted May 1, 2017 Well my first choice is going to surprise you but it is a 6'8" Powell Max3D 683 CEF/ I fish with 12 baitcasting setups and the most all purpose rig I have is my Powell Max 683CEF (it is the older model). Please go read the Tackletour review on it. They threw everything from a 1/8 bait to a 2 1/2 ounce swimbait and it handled it perfectly, something a Medium Heavy Extra Fast tipped rod is not expected to do, especially since it is rated for baits weighing from 1/4 to 3/4. This is my main swim jig rod. I like to throw Dirty Jigs swimjigs in 3/8 and 1/2 ounce, sometimes with a creature trailer but more often with a 5 inch Kalin Lunker Grub, or a bait like a Keitech swimbait. Here is the link to the 683 review. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewpowell683cxfast.html If you want a similar action but require a 7 footer than a Powell Max 732CEF would be my choice. They suggest using it for jigs, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. A Hollow bodied frog bite is not that much different than a buzzbait bite. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 1, 2017 Super User Posted May 1, 2017 I think it depends on how heavy the cover is and the size of the baits you intend to use. As long as the grass isn't super thick I think a stout MH-F is what I'd look for. I normally don't go for the lower end St. Croix rods but I was out with a friend last weekend and he has a new St. Croix Bass X and of course I had to check it out and I have to admit at $100 it is nice but more importantly it fits what you are looking for. It is the 7'1" MH-F but like other St. Croix rods it is about 1/2 power over what it is listed but it will give you enough backbone for fishing swimjigs and frogs but it has a little more tip than a heavy power rod so you can sling spinnerbaits in open water without feeling like you are using a broom stick. 2 Quote
GreenGhostMan Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 I use a 7'2" MH-regular Daiwa Tatula for swim jigs... Absolutely love it. Feels like it was designed for swim jigs. Is currently my favorite rod. 1 Quote
FrankN209 Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 As smalljaw said, it depends on how heavy of a swimjig you'll be throwing and the cover.. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted May 1, 2017 Super User Posted May 1, 2017 Okuma Helios 7' MH/F for $108 would be worth consideration. Weighs in at just 3.5 ounces balances well so that takes care of the "too heavy" dilemma. Has backbone for frog use and sensitivity for jigs. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Okuma-Helios-7-Medium-Heavy-Cast-Rod/34742965?action=product_interest&action_type=title&beacon_version=1.0.2&bucket_id=irsbucketdefault&client_guid=fd038399-581a-4fc1-8607-7dafc2b26b8c&config_id=2&customer_id_enc&findingMethod=p13n&guid=fd038399-581a-4fc1-8607-7dafc2b26b8c&item_id=34742965&parent_anchor_item_id=34742964&parent_item_id=34742964&placement_id=irs-2-m2&reporter=recommendations&source=new_site&strategy=PWVAV&visitor_id=cX6xH3J2Q_2I9KTBIv2iXY Quote

I have fished this rod in medium to heavy cover including lily pads with no problems. 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 1, 2017 Super User Posted May 1, 2017 Irod G2 IR744C, 7'4" MH fast is in your price point and does everything you want. Tom Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted May 2, 2017 Super User Posted May 2, 2017 I'd go with smalljaw's suggestion. Quote

The cover/veg isn't super thick, at it's thickest in the summer...Lake Seminole, so it's a grass everywhere lake. Again pad fields, submergent to barely topped out Hydrilla and millfoil at it's thickest. I genrally throw a 3/8oz swim jig in the grass and 1/2oz on high speed reel in the pads. I tend to reel to quick sometimes with moving baits, so I opt for the 1/2oz spinnerbait over the 3/8 90% of the time. Im looking for something that's isn't so heavy to pulse/twitch the jig swimming and not wear me out as well lol. thanks for the input, I'll def put that on my list to look at Quote
Poolshark Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Some suggestions that I like for the price St Croix mojo bass 7"4 heavy fast for heavier cover and heavier swimjigs/frogs and also the 7"1 mhf in modest cover for spinnerbaits, smaller swimjigs and smaller frogs. They go for around 139 Quote
