Im looking to pick up two new Dobyns Fury, here is the two applications I'm looking to use them for.

1: Spinnerbaits, Chattterbaits, and the occasional Jig.

My thought: 734c

2: Flukes, Weightless Plastics, And light t-rigs

My thought: 703c

My question is, how do you guys feel about the rods I've selected for my intended uses. Will a 734 have a nice tip to throw spinnerbaits, also could the 734 handle a jig that is 1/2oz+trailer if needed?

Also, is the 703c more of a medium powered rod? That is what I'm looking for and I've read that Dobyns fish lighter than they are rated at.

My 703SF fishes dead on to a medium but I don't own any of their casting rods or any of the Fury line.

Thanks! I appreciate the input and I assume that power ratings should be fairly similar between the spinning and casting series.

I own the Dobyns FR 703C and love it, It is rated med heavy but feels closer to a Medium rating.

I have been using it for light T-Rigs and it is doing wonderful. It is a very light rod with good sensitivity and good back bone.

I love it for Flukes, weightless worms and light t-rigs.

I do not own the 734c so can't comment on that.

Hope this helps.

I own the 734c and use it exactly as you plan to. Works very well. 3/8 oz -1/2 oz bladed jigs, spinner baits, and jigs are the main lures I throw on it. It is a little on slower side IMO for jig use but I use braid to combat that and use it quite a bit. I am typically tossing a 3/8 oz jig though instead of the 1/2 oz but either shouldn't be an issue. I own the 734 and the 735. Two of my favorite rods. The 734 can almost do it all. Most versatile rod I own by far. Even use it as a trig or light Carolina rig rod from time to time. Really cant go wrong with the 734.

Don't own the 703 but if I was in the market I would buy it to replace my 1/4 oz and lower trig/plastics rod.

Gary Dobyns has said many times the 734 is the most all purpose and best selling rod in all of his rod lines.

Those two rods will perform really nicely for your intended use.  Give us an update after you catch your first fish in each.

My friend Kris ( a member on here) has sold off a ot of gear and replaced 4 of his rods with Dobyns Fury rods. He loves them. One is a 734 and one is his 765 Flip. The one other I know is a FR 703SF.  He has come to love these rods.

I have three Dobyns, a 634cb, 684cb and a 735C. The 735c is a med/heavy but really fishes like a heavy, it is my dedicated frog rod. All my Dobyns are great rods.

I too am just starting to look at a rod I can throw Spinnerbaits, Chattterbaits, and buzzbaits I can throw a country mile on...and considering the 735CB. I don't think you will go wrong with either rod you are looking at.

My 634cb and 684cb have Lew’s Team Lite Speed Spool reels on them and the 735c has Curato 200HG.

Bot the rods you mentioned will work great for what you want them to do!

68camaro your 735C is listed as a MAG Heavy not a medium heavy. They are terrific rods.  My frog rod is a Champion XP DC705C. That is the 735Cs little brother. It is rated as a Mag HVT also.  Both make great frog and deep jig rods.  You are correct they fish more like a heavy.

For what your looking to use these rods for your powers are spot on the 4 power heavy fishes more like a med/hvy with some extra umph it doesn't feel quite all the way down to a med/hvy kinda like a Mag med/hvy if that makes sense.

Also the 3 power med/hvy same applies to that one also. The whole fury line feels like about a half step down from what it's rated. All have a great tip on them

the higher in the Dobyns line you go tho it seems the closer there ratings are to what it says I own several furys and Champion xp's and Dobyns makes a hell of a stick hope you enjoy them and fish hard!!!

and I will have to agree with @fishnkamp the 4 power is a great rod and a true all purpose rod Gary Dobyns could honestly just make the 704 and 734s and just make them with different handle lengths for different applications and you could be set. I have a Champion 704 and if I'm just going to check out a new spot or don't feel like carrying all my gear I just take the 704 and I feel confident in fishing any technique on that rod even tho it is my dedicated jig and t-rig rod

You're pretty much spot on with your choices. I would just give the shop a call and they will spend ample time explaining similar rods that do the same job. I've ended up buying more rods than I needed simply because they gave me multiple options. Looking into getting a 703 spinning champion and 705/704cb.

You are right on the money, both rods.  The 703C will actually do more. It's a decent jerkbait rod and smaller crankbaits in a pinch. You'll be pleased.

@fishnkamp finally picked these two rods up today and all I can say is WOW. They feel amazing. Only used the 734 today and caught about 15 1-2lbers in 30 minutes. The rod felt amazing and it had just the right amount of tip and backbone. I caught them all on a 3/8oz spinnerbait with a split tail trailer and the rod loaded up very nicely, I was able to cast them "a country mile". For anyone who's on the fence about getting one of these rods, DO IT. I'll be adding the 735 to the collection here soon as well.  In comparison the the St croix mojo bass spinnerbait rod, the 734 blows it out of the water. What beats a $110 rod that fishes like a $200 rod? Nothing. Besides getting them for $85 piece new like I did ?

I am so glad you like them. I am one of the guys that has been speaking up for them as you know. I am lucky that my local tackle shop is an exclusive dealer for them in a 4 state area. I get to put my hands on them frequently. I have a friend, and fellow member on here, Kris that refuses to spend more than %100 to $150 for a rod and after using one Fury he sold off many of his longtime rod arsenal. He now fishes with 4 Fury's withthe intent on adding a few more.  It is hard to explain the "balance and feel" to someone on the web.  I personally own Sieras and Champion XPs. Since all of his rods get nicer as you go up in the lineup you can imagine how he DC705C is. That is my frog/heavy jig rod

Very true, you've been the main advocate for the fury's and rightfully so. You can tell that Mr. Dobyns really put time and effort into creating a rod at the $100 price point that out performs nearly all other rods you can buy for the same amount. I'm excited to get my 735, and then after that move up to a Sierra. That full cork grip is a beauty B)

Also, thanks for all the help and advice you've provided me with in my search for rods and reels. I'm loving the Dobyns/Daiwa combo

I'm happy for you.

For that deal you can't go wrong. I find my Dobyns rod to be an amazing rod/deal.

Now that you have your rod arsenal coming together lets talk about some lure/ techniques that will help you catch some more fish.  Here are some of my go to secrets that I do not keep secret.

These are baits that end up on my deck almost every time out.

Goodies for spinning.  I use both a 6 foot ML and a 6 foot fast action G Loomis Spin Jig rods. If I were to purchase a rod today it would be a Dobyns 702 and 703 or a 692 and 693.

Make sure you add Z Man Ned Rigs, of course Sencos weighted and unweighted, they can be fished wacky style unweighted, texas style, wacky with a jig head, even on a finesse style carolina rig using split shots.  Never forget o try tubes, these can be internally weighted, fished using a lead jig head, and lots of other ways.  I never leave home without having a Kalin 5 inch Lunker Grub tied on. My favorites include bluegill, smoke salt & pepper, and watermelon red flake.  One other note on these grubs, I prefer to rig them texas style using Bass Pro Shops Perfect Finesse Worm Jigheads.  They come in lots of colors and are made up of a great sharp hook and a fully attached worm weight. I like 1/8 and 1/4.  These along with the larger versions are great to fish worms also.  They are basically a type of slider head.

Now for the baitcasting equipment.

If you are not already fishing any soft paddle tail swimbaits  you are missing out.

My favorite is Reaction Innovation Skinny Dippers, but I often fish all 3 sizes.  I rig them using 3 methods, unweighted and belly weighted using special swimbait hooks and lastly using a Picasso lead jig head made special for swimbaits. They look like the head of a fish molded on the hook. I like 3/8 and 1/2 oz. for fishing down to 30 feet.  These baits are really tough to use. Throw it out let it sink a bit twitch it, swim it back then kill it letting it flutter add a twitch and repeat. Oh I forgot the most important thing, HOLD onto your rod at all times.  Big fish eat these baits.  I really like White Trash, Houdini, Sexy Shad, Sungill, and  a few other colors.

Try these out and see if you catch a few more fish.
