Which one is better for me

Hello guys, last weekend my trolling motor shaft cracked. Good news is this gives me a reason to get a new one. I looking into buying a used trolling motor but don't know if I should go with a cable steer or a remote control. I only reason I though about remote control was I fish the Everglades and a lot of long stretched canals. Would a remote be able to keep me on the middle of the canal? Would I need Ipilot link? Thanks for the help

iPilot Link has follow the contour with Lakemaster mapping. If you have Humminbird electronics that are Ethernet compatible and Lakemaster has HD coverage in those canals, then yes.

 

Otherwise you have to operate the trolling motor yourself to maintain position and direction.

Thanks but lakemaster does not cover any of the canals I fish

I have a wireless Motorguide and I'm not a big fan. It has nothing to do with the brand at all, I just don't care for the wireless. I have a keyfob and a foot control. The foot control is very moody, so much so I've given up on it! The keyfob works great....but if you're fighting a fish, or cranking and need to move you're screwed! You do one or the other not both. If the foot control worked better and laid out better it might be a different story. 

Keep in mind my trolling motor is 3-4 years old and a lot has changed. If I could afford one I might go with something like a new MG or Minkota.

Yeah I think I'm going to go with a foot controlled unless I go on a buddy's with a wireless and I like it. Thanks for the input

If you have a Terrova you can use the foot pedal or the remote. Adding iPilot to a another model eliminates the foot pedal all together. It will then only work with the remote. The Terrova will follow a recorded path or you can use the cruise control to keep the boat on a heading without having to use any manual correction and without any iPilot link to a depth finder.

So if I record a track on  the terrova I can set it to follow that track again? I know about the cruise control which it might work. How would you record a track? Can I use my humminbird 898?

To record a track, no depth finder is used at all. You hit the track record button on the remote and the trolling motor will record the path you run up to two miles. Go back to the starting point within 1/4 mile, hit the start button, and it will automatically take you to the place you started recording and follow the track you previously made. It will store up to 6 tracks.

Sweet this would work. Do the older Terrovas have this? Thanks, it's definitely an option now.

If the older one has Auto Pilot and a remote control, it should. I have 2 Terrovas. My oldest one did not come with a remote but the one I got 2 years ago does.

Linking a Humminbird to a Minnkota with iPilot Link will give you more memory for more iTracks. But if you don't need a lot of track files, you don't need the Link version.
