FrankN209 Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 What line do you use on your BFS reels? I'm using Gliss 24lb which has a .007 diameter. I want to get the most line as possible on my new CALCUTTA CONQUEST BFS without compromising strength. It seems to have the same spool as the Shimano ALDEBARAN BFS. Right now I can empty my spool quite easily. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted April 30, 2017 Super User Posted April 30, 2017 Good question Frank. I know braid will have a very thin diameter but the tradeoff seams to be the non stretch factor of braid possibly harming the delicateness of the spool. I have yet to down to true BFS reels in the purest sense of the term, but I do have a few SV 105s and I like to run 6 or 8 # Yozuri Hybrid. These are my finesse hard bait setups so I am tossing hardbaits around rock and rip rap and topwaters alongside fairly thick weed edges. I need a bit more muscle to move fish away and put a little pressure on them to keep them from burying themselves in the slop so I really don't want to go "too" light on the line. What are you trying to do with the Conquest? Are you fishing in areas where the cover is a bit more dense or is it mostly open water/sparse cover? You could try something like mono in the 6# range. Maybe opt for one with good handling and smaller diameter. You could use flouro as well if you don't intended to use presentations like topwater for example. With as delicate as those BFS spools are even with the drag set properly, I personally, would opt for mono or flouro. I am sure there are a good number of folks running braid or braid with a leader for the thinner diameter and maybe a touch more distance. 1 Quote

I'll give mono a shot, I have some 8lb YoZuri already. 1 Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted April 30, 2017 Super User Posted April 30, 2017 If I am seeing the line capacity right, that reel holds 50 yards of 6# line. Knowing how brilliant the Conquest line is at casting I would probably try not to go over 6 # line. The problem with going to say 8# is that you will likely be close to if not spooling the reel with slightly heavier and aerodynamic baits. I have caught a fair amount of decent size fish of various species on a 4# line on spinning gear. You just have to have more patience, play the fish a bit longer, and need a bit more luck to land the better quality fish. Good luck with whatever route you go. With a small spool capacity, at least you know that should you decide to try a few lines to experiment with, you won't out much line or $. 1 Quote

LuckyHandsINC. Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 I'm new to the BFS game but have been using 6# trilene xl. I thought about using braid but even with the thin diameter it's not truly light line and to me that's most of the fun with BFS. Got my first few BFS fish this past weekend and it was awesome. Couple of 3# smallies had the rod bent in half and the Aldebaran BFS has a drag clicker which also added to the fun. Can definitely see an addiction coming. 1 Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted April 30, 2017 Super User Posted April 30, 2017 I use 4lb and 6lb Trilene XT. I do have 2/6 Fireline on my Revo LTX but it's coming off, too much dig. 1 Quote

Same with this new reel, it has a drag clicker, I was shocked when I heard it. Quote

Super User fishwizzard Posted May 2, 2017 Super User Posted May 2, 2017 Right now I have 6lb XL on a PX68 that I use with an UL rod and 8.4lb Seaguar finesse fluoro on a sv105 on a L action rod. I like the XL, but am going to step down to 4lb next time I refill I think. The Seaguar Finesse is decent, but seems weak, but it is very thin and manageable. I am going to try a few more low poundage floros and see which one I like the best. 2 Quote

I might give braid a try again once I can go a couple of trips without a major backlash. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted May 4, 2017 Super User Posted May 4, 2017 Honestly I liked the XL so much I am giving mono a shot on a few other reels as well now. I have never lost a fish due to line breakage that wasn't a pickerel bite-off so until that starts happening I am not going to worry too much about line strength. 1 Quote

onenutinthewater Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 My conquest BFS just arrived today so curious what you guys have found on preferred line after several months? Mine will be strictly used for casting from the boat in trout lakes. Fish can get up 8-10 # but more common is 2-4#. Quote
