DomQ Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 I do my own servicing on my bait casters, and currently using shimanos reel oil and just some basic grease that I have around the house from my mechanic days. My buddies have asked me to work on all of their reels so I just wanted to know what everyone was using to service their reels. Quote
LuckyHandsINC. Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 I just started using cal's grease and it seems good. Works for all parts and seems to stick to gears better than some others out there. For oil I use the blue oil that comes with the daiwa reels for heavier presentations and I use hedgehog ultra light alchemy oil for light bait presentations. The alchemy oil is very nice super low viscosity. 1 Quote
FrankN209 Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 I think they all work pretty well. Just don't over lube with the oil and grease, tends to slow down the reel. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted April 30, 2017 Super User Posted April 30, 2017 I have used Shimano drag grease and gear grease and Shimano reel oil as well as HH Studios Light oil as well. They all work good. Cals grease as well as Yamaha Marine grease are pretty popular choices as well. I am not a fan of any product labeled "Hot Sauce" or "Reel Butter" for anything involving maintaining reels. Hot Sauce will dye things and is just a mess and Reel butter is a very average at best product. For a few bucks more there are better choices than both of these products. If you Google "Big Green Fish" and go the their website they have some nice info on reel servicing from bearing oil to grease to tools and cleaners. The Tackle Trap also has a lot of products as well that you could buy. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 Reels don't require anything special other than on greased drags andvdrsg grease works fine on gears. If you need drag grease marine grease or superlube work well. Gear oil on sliding parts, level wind and non spool bearings. Remoil or other light oil on spool bearings. Quote
BassThumb Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 TSI 321 - light oil for bearings 85W-140 gear oil - heavy oil for the slow-moving parts or parts that see a lot of water spray, like the worm gear or where the bail pivots on the body of a spinning reel. Superlube grease - the best I've tried yet for gears. Cal's Drag Grease - drag washers 1 Quote
Super User RoLo Posted April 30, 2017 Super User Posted April 30, 2017 'Lube is Lube' and the one you happen to be using whichever one it might be, will most likely become your favorite. In reality, the major difference is 'viscosity'. CASTING (higher viscosity): Shimano Star Drag Grease SPINNING (lower viscosity): Shimano PermaLube Roger 1 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 Boy, this is a subject where everyone has their favorite. I even read on a site sometime ago where a fellow said all he ever did was dip his reels in kerosene because his grandpa told him it would work. Personally, I don't think it is a good idea For what it is worth here is my list of what I use and there are numerous variations out there but my approach for 15 years has been keep it simple with proven products: Spool bearings...Yellow Rocket Fuel Handle bearings...ReelX Crank shaft bearings... ReelX Pinion bearings...usually packed in either Super Lube, or Yamaha blue Marine I am currently experimenting with dipping a couple of my pinion bearings in TSI301 and it is working extremely well. If you get into TSI 301, or 321 be aware you cannot use grease with them, because they are not compatible with grease. Worm gears...ReelX Drive and pinion gears and vinyl gears...Super Lube, or Yamaha blue Marine . Quote
DomQ Posted May 1, 2017 Author Posted May 1, 2017 Wow didn't expect so many replys! Thanks guys, I'm going to look up some of the products and sites listed above and go from there. Now when you guys grease the gears and the drag washers, how much is enough and what's to much? I lightly coat the teeth on the gears but try not to where it cakes up on the pinion. Quote

BobP Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 If you are oiling your own stuff, choose what you like and you can fix any lube problems as they arise later. If you're doing stuff for others, I'd tend to be more conservative and use oil of a little higher viscosity that will stay working longer than the very thin oil I use on my own reels. You don't know how long those reels will be used before they get another shot of lube, but it's almost certainly until a bearing starts screaming. Otherwise they'd be servicing their own stuff to start with. I like Superlube grease and Shimano Drag grease for drags and use them for my own and friends reels. They last a long time and work great.
