I haven't used an A rig before and need some advice on the type of rod, reel, and line to use.

What rod should I use? (Length, power, action)

What should I look for in a reel?

What line should I use? (mono, fluoro, braid) and what line strength?

If you have particular makes/models of rod, reel, line that would be great. Otherwise, advice on what to look for is appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

I know there are several rod manufacturers with purpose-built A-rig rods.  I'm not a huge fan of the A-rig, so in the few instances I do toss one, I just use my frog setup.  7'6" HF with 65# braid.  I have a 7:1 reel on my setup, but I would imagine most folks go with a lower gear ratio.

I have a few rods that can handle the A-rig, normally i choose the combo that better matches the A-rig that i pretende to use and the way i pretend to fish it (weight and speed of recovery).

For smaller and lighter A-rigs i normally use a Colmic Herakles Cálida 7.2" X-Heavy, moderate fast action (1/2-3oz) paired with a Abu Garcia Gen 2 Revo Winch 5.4:1 or a St. Croix Mojo Bass 7.4" Heavy fast action (3/8- 1 1/2oz) paired with a Lews Super Duty 6.4:1.

For heavier A-rigs i use two Colmic Herakles Cálida Big Bait 7.3" X-Heavy moderate fast action (1-5oz), one paired with a Shimano Curado 201DPV 5.0:1 and the other with a Daiwa Lexa 300 7.1:1.

In therms of line i have 15 pound fluorocarbon (Seaguar InvizX) on the Revo Winch and the Super Duty, 20 pound flurocarbon on the Curado (also InvizX) and 20 pound mono (Berkley Big Game) on the Lexa.

I Know most guys like to use longer rods for longer casts but since i fish from a small boat i prefere rods bellow the 7.5" mark.

I use it a lot.  I normally use 5 " baits on it.  I have 3 setups for it.  2 of them are 6'6" and 1 is a 7'.  I like the 7' best.  I use 5.1:1 reels and 50 # Power Pro braid.

I dont throw a-rigs much, but when i do i dont throw huge ones. I use 4 three inch baits and 1 five inch bait. 7'11 heavy power, moderate action deep cranking rod. 50Lb braid or 20lb p-line cxx. Reel is a orra winch 5.4:1 ratio.

For a good but reasonably priced rod take a look at an Irod Genesis II IRG7104AB “Bama Rig Special”  It runs $150 and was designed for fishing any A rigs. Dobyns offers the Fury FR795SB and that is a 7'9" rod that can handle the a rigs and big swimbaits.  It runs $120.

Line capacity is important when throwing the A rig because it is a toss a mile and retrieve bait, so sme anglers choose the traditional round reels rather than low profile baitcasters or a low profile reel that has a bit larger capacity.

I don't throw the rig all that often, and when I do I like the smaller rigs like the Flash Mob Junior. On that, I'll throw 3 smaller jigheads and two dummies 4 of the baits are a 4" Eco Pro Tungsten Swing Shads and the last one is a 5". For that I use my frog setup a 7'1" H/F St. Croix Mojo Bass with 50lb braid, and a Johnny Morris Signature Series Bait caster in 7.1:1. It works fairly well for that, but if I were going to use it a lot, I'd buy a dedicated A-rig Rod, like the Mojo swimbait/a-rig rod. I would also go for a higher compacity reel as well, but I'd stick with the 50 lb braid.
