TX-Deluxe Posted April 29, 2017 Posted April 29, 2017 Bought some Braid Suffix 832 20lb. I like it however I have the itch to try Sniper FC. I want the line to sink . I've never thought how to try to save the line. I want to put it on my spinning reel. $35 is alot to me for line that has only 8 hours on it. Or is there a technique to just put it back on an empty spool for future use. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted April 29, 2017 Super User Posted April 29, 2017 It's braid so it has no memory. Just hand wind it onto an empty spool. Good to go. 1 Quote
TX-Deluxe Posted April 29, 2017 Author Posted April 29, 2017 Could 2 people do this one holding each rod? Some1 pulling it off with spinning reel and someone thumbing the BC spool? Should I make a video of this to show how stupid I look? Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted April 29, 2017 Super User Posted April 29, 2017 Just loosen the drag on the casting reel till it doesn't take much force to pull line out. Then thread it through the spinning rod guides and tie your arbor knot to the spool. Reel it on just like normal after that. 7 Quote

Super User WRB Posted April 30, 2017 Super User Posted April 30, 2017 Run the line through a wet terry cloth towel to keep even pressure and wet the line. Tom Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 Have a helper hold the casting rod upside down so the line comes off the bottom of the spool. This helps keep the line from twisting. 2 Quote
Fisher-O-men Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 That is a unconventional way of filling a spinning reel, so there will be some twist. Once you get in a boat, trail the line behind the boat and then reel it back on. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 Whether it's on a reel or a filler spool, line comes off the bottom when spooling a spinning reel and off the top filling a casting reel. 1 Quote

Super User NHBull Posted April 30, 2017 Super User Posted April 30, 2017 My 20 lb 832 sinks just as good as my 15 tastu. Tested is for a couple weeks. As soon as it breaks surface tension, game on. I am not sure I will be using any FC moving forward......except for leader... Quote
TX-Deluxe Posted April 30, 2017 Author Posted April 30, 2017 So with a Trig it really doesn't matter? Quote

Wait, really? I thought it was off the bottom for everything? Quote

He's spooling braid from one to the other so twist isn't much of an issue in this case. Quote

Yes, I've read that in several places, but it makes no sense. The physics don't add up. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted May 1, 2017 Super User Posted May 1, 2017 I used to work with steel aircraft cable all the time and it was essential that one pull it from the bottom of the spool. No idea why, but it was a nightmare whenever someone did it wrong and the spool dumped. A backlash in 1/4 GAC is a wonderful way to waste an afternoon. When I got into fishing I would spool my reels by feeding from the bottom and it seems to work fine, what's the argument for doing it one way or the other? Quote

If you are taking off braid to put on flouro for a T rig, it will make no difference if the line sinks. There is a weight at the end of your line, so if you're using flouro or anchor rope, it's going to sink. Or you could just attach a leader on your braid. Quote

My reasoning with this is I carry a 2 piece St.Croix stick. Setting up a leader on site would seem a little tedious. Maybe I can allow alot of extra slack...take rod apart and not have to cut line during transport in my rod case. I'm also not understanding leader length and regards to the knot bumping guides upon cast. 12-18" leader with knot coming right at tip? Quote
onetime Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Doesn't matter if it's two piece, do you cut your line every time you break the rod down? Tie a leader on and leave that on there, and retie as needed. As far as leader length, you could go anywhere from 18 inches to 18 feet, I use an Alberto knot. Quote
