I'm going to give this finesse Carolina technique a try this year.  Doing research on it, it seems that most people use small worms, brush hogs, and minnow style baits.  Is this a good technique with crawdad style baits like a Rage Tail or a Flappin' Hog?

My favorite craw of all time was the old Guido Bugs and Guido Baby Bugs. They have been out of the scene for many moons. I still have some. I fish others and I can honestly say in my opinion none are better. Just how it has worked out for me. I also fish the 4" Zoom lizards the same way. The Baby Brush Hogs work great, chartreuse pumpkin, bull frog and grasshopper I've been using for awhile. Over the winter I bought a few black versions. I've gotten hung up on blacks and reds the last few years. Still out to lunch about them but have been giving them an honest go.

I use as realistic of a craw bait as I can with this technique and small as possible. There are better ways to present bigger craw baits with a lot of action.

The little Yum craws and Big Bite makes a little 3" craw worm that is insanely productive on females during the pre-spawn. They have have almost no action. They just pick up and fall really slow horizontally back down. They are dirt cheap too.

Could you link the BBB craw please?

Curly tail grubs are great for mojo. As are lizards.

The difficulty in using any 'action tail/legged bait on a mojo rig is getting the action to work as they normally need to be worked fairly quick to do so. A heavier weight will allow you todo that and still keep your weight making contact with the bottom. A C-rig is a better option for most of that style bait.

If you're looking for a big profile bait, try a tube. You get bulk and action in a slow presentation and it will stay off the bottom linger with a more enticing (IMO) fall back to the bottom.

I have 2 favorite baits for a Mojo rig, the first was the original Mojo Reaper which has been discontinued. So now that has been replaced by Poor boys Erie Darter, and the second bait is the River Rock Custom Baits SM Killer. I use a 1/8oz cylinder style weight I pour myself and with both baits I use a 1/0 hook.

Small finesse worm is about all I use along with a cylinder or bullet weight in 1/8oz.

I have plenty of Erie darters (big fan of those on a drop shot). Are you using the 4?

Take a look at the split shot thread on this page, I discribe the slip shot rig in detail.

Don Iovino products (TW) makes a 3" reaper and several styles of finesse worms, his smallmouth killer color is good! GYCB 4" Hula grub on a 3/0 light wire off set hook is another overlooked finesse C-rig soft plastic. Roboworms FX series in People's worm or sculpin is another good smallmouth choice.
