Is it even worth it?

This Saturday I have a little bit of time.  Air temperature was 70 a few days ago.  Now, its barely hitting 50.  On Saturday, its going to be a high of 50 degrees with a lot of rain.  Is it even worth it to try and fish?  I highly doubt my chances of success.

Weather conditions only give us a rough estimate, you never know until you kick some tires.

Dude.  Just because you aren't trying to have a baby doesn't mean it isn't worth it to go through the motions ?

 

Fishing is is better than not fishing.  Always.  Catching is even better but hey not every scratch ticket is a winner haha

Very true.  However, that feeling of being cold is my least favorite feeling. My favorite feeling is hooking up to a fish.  I think I am going to go, since I wasn't able to last weekend.

As long as you have raingear, it's worth it! The only thing that will keep me home is high winds. Fish still bite when the air temp is cool, and sometimes I've found the action to be better with some rain!

Water temp is 45

Air temp will be about the same.

At a minimum I figure I will learn something......and may get lucky!

I actually faced similar conditions pretty recently and did much better than I thought I would. It was pretty much like you said, about 70 and sunny a few days earlier in the week, then friday to saturday it dropped to the mid 40's and was drizzling rain. I was pretty miserable while on the water saturday but the fish were still biting. Ended up getting 5 before calling it quits due to my hands getting numb.

Sometimes this is more relevant than ANY weather condition.  Learn to combat it or settle for fishing only on the few days a year that weather suits your preference. 

 

If weather were the main factor no one would ice fish!!

If you love fishing like I do, you'll go whenever you can and try your hardest regardless of conditions (within reason)

Some of my biggest catches have been on horrible days. If it's not a thunderstorm and I get a chance I'm heading out lol.

Wear the right gear and go. Just don't go out there thinking you have no chance.

 

First off you absolutely can catch fish in those conditions. Might be a tougher bite, you might be surprised though. Secondly, although I don't fully understand why, confidence or lack of confidence seems to really make a big difference in success both fishing and life in general. Don't think there's no way you can catch one or you're about guaranteeing you won't. 

 

You might go freeze your butt off and get humbled or you might not. One thing you can count on is that the only chance you have to catch a fish on Saturday is to get a lure in the water.

Regardless of the conditions, if you're not enjoying yourself, what's the point exactly ?

Bad weather has a way of becoming a non-factor when I'm using the net a bunch.

The best way to guarantee you won't catch any fish is to not go fishing. Fifty degrees with a little rain isn't really that cold. My biggest bass last year was caught during a snowstorm.

While not exactly an authority on the subject, my grandmother always told me that her mother never considered going fishing except on rainy days.  I don't know with certainty what she might have been fishing for, but my first "grown-up" rod and reel was her hand-me-down rig, and it included an ancient redhead Bass-O-Reno casting plug.  That was in west central Wisconsin, and it was purely anecdotal, so take it for what it's worth.  I've had good days when it was deeply overcast or with showers or drizzle, but never had any luck when much wind was blowing.

It's funny how we all have our don't like to fish times. Some of my best days have been windy. Went out a few weeks ago. 15-20 mph sustained winds with 30 mph gusts. Caught a bunch of fish. Talked to someone else who fishes the lake I fished regularly, as in he's been fishing it for 20 years, and he said they were the first bass he'd heard about anyone getting this spring. Now, you're more likely to see me at the lake the more windy it is.

It's not always worth it.  Yesterday I would've been better off staying at work.  I got beat up taking my kayak out.  Was cold and too windy.  Ended up bending my paddle fighting the wind and current while trying to get out of a tree.  Only managed one small fish and zero other bites.

Yea it's weird I used to love fishing sunny days with slick calm water, and hated even the slightest wind. But now it's those 15mph overcast days with impending rain that get me excited. Of course if I'm fishing out of my kayak I have to be reasonable. Whitecaps will send me home just because effectively moving around looking for fish becomes nearly impossible.
