Super User NHBull Posted April 27, 2017 Super User Posted April 27, 2017 Gents, i really want want to start playing in the weeds and grass this year and the Smaller Hudds weedless caught my eye. The reviews at TW are great, but I often see members here with contrary options. Any input is appropriated Thanks in advance Al Quote
SFL BassHunter Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 I second that. Would love to see some input about them. I've thought about getting one for a while, but haven't pulled the trigger. Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted April 27, 2017 Super User Posted April 27, 2017 I've used the grass minnows and shads, both work well. Just make sure you set the hook like it's a frog and you're good. They get torn up pretty easy but just invest in some mend-it. 2 Quote

Another thing that I would add is some sort of scent to act as a lubricant to help the swimbait slide through the mouth and let the hook connect. I use BANG Craw/Shad Combo, just coat the entire thing with it. But I'm sure you could use Megastrike or Pro-Cure if you have it, I just prefer to spray something on my lures... 1 Quote
j bab Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 For me, if I'm targeting giants I want a hudd or other big bait. Giants have no problem eating an 8" or larger bait. So for me, there's no need to throw a 6" hudd. If I'm targeting "tournament sized" bass or whatever, I don't believe that a hudd is better than other, cheaper weedless baits. I sold my 6" hudds - I just never threw them. Because the "big bait theory" is that monsters prefer big meals and they are harder to fool, so the big, natural presentation is key. Now of course this is just my opinion, there are people who will disagree with me and that's okay, but the only Hudds that I have are 8 inchers. 1 Quote
1234567 Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 For Florida grass fishing I'd skip on the hudds. I use what every other guy in Florida is using now and that's a paddle tail type like gambler ez for example. The hudds tear up to quick and they have gone up exponentially in price over the years. I prefer to use weedless shads or six inch versions in clearer water with gravel or Boulder bottoms. Quote

I was thinking bout getting the bigger ones like the 6.5 inch but man they are expensive. Quote

I have the hudd 68 and after seeing how fragile they are I wouldn't get anything smaller that would easily get slashed in half by pickerel. Mend-it does wonders but you still need to have all the pieces to fix it. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 27, 2017 Super User Posted April 27, 2017 3:16 8" Mission Fish is one of the best grass/weeds swimbaits availble. 68, 8" and 10" Hudds are better weed edge and deep structure swimbaits. Tom 2 Quote
Primus Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 I really like the weedless shad, I don't have a lot of experience with the grass minnow. Why throw the weedless shad ? First of all it swims very natural . I also use the boot tail style baits in grass but there are times when the more natural swimming Hudd gets bites over the other options . I think it really shines in a clear water lake with light wind when the fish can get a really good look at it. The other reason I like to throw it is it not stocked in the Tackle Shops by my house and I like to be differentiate myself from the other local fisherman when I can . 1 Quote
