Zachb6 Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 I was wondering what the best way to put these numbers on with them being straight and level, this is my first boat thats going to be brand new and I dont quite know if the DMV gives me those numbers or if I have to go and get the package of stickers from the sporting goods store and stick them all on individually? Thanks, Zach Quote
WestBranch Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 In Maine you get the numbers yourselves.. I bought mine individually from Walmart. They only give you the registration sticker for the year. They have to be 3" reflective stickers. And place on both side of the bow. Maine inland fisheries webpage shows how they want it applied, I'd guess your state webpage would also. Quote
cfalco Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Texas has a law about how far back from the bow they go, I am sure your state has a law just google your state and boat registration number placement it will come right up. Mine are too close to the bow, I have been told that by the wardens but they dont write me up, at least they have not yet. I am older, no booze in the boat they want the young kids with beer. lol They just pull up look around the boat tell me that and drive on. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted April 26, 2017 Super User Posted April 26, 2017 There are companies that can make custom numbers. The complete number will be on a backing which will allow you to put them on straight. 2 Quote

See this was more what i was thinking because it sounds pretty stressful and difficult to get the pack of numbers and letters then level and place them perfectly on the boat. I could be wrong but thats just my mentality, correct me if im over thinking it! Quote

Thanks, Zach I am also in Texas purchasing a used boat they do not give you the numbers just the registration number sticker. New may be different? There are a list of rules here that they are suppose to follow. Mine are the old Walmart squares that look like Also mine do not actually follow the rules exactly but the warden has never said a word. The last two letters on mine have no space or dash separating them from the numbers. Quote Number must be painted, applied as a decal, or otherwise affixed to both sides of the bow. Number must read from left to right on both sides of the bow. Number must be in at least three-inch-high BLOCK letters. Number’s color must contrast with its background. Letters must be separated from the numbers by a space or hyphen: TX 3717 ZW or TX-3717-ZW. No other numbers may be displayed on either side of the bow. Decals must be affixed on both sides of the bow, three inches behind (toward the stern) and in line with the number. Mine already had numbers when I bought it and until I repaint my boat or they get messed up I probably won't change them. But when I do I have a friend that does lettering of all kinds. He would recomend somewhere like a sign shop or online like here http://www.signspecialist.com/lettering/lettering.html They come in a sheet and will easily be lined up and professional looking. I found this for Nebraska Quote License placement: The assigned numbers, which are designated on the certificate of number shall be placed on each side of the forward half of the vessel and reading left to right in one horizontal plane, starting with the validation sticker followed by two capital block letters “NB”) followed by a 2-inch space and three or four digits in a numerical group followed by a 2-inch space and two or three capital block letters. Letters and numbers will be block figures at least three inches in height of contrasting color and visible for 100 feet. Purchase of the letters and numbers except the validation sticker and the attachment to the motorboat are the responsibility of the owner. No numbers and letters other than the registration numbers, letters and validation stickers shall be displayed on any mechanically-powered boat on either side of the forward half of the vessel. source http://outdoornebraska.gov/boatingregulations/ Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted April 26, 2017 Super User Posted April 26, 2017 Hey Zach - forget those Plain Boring stick on letters; Kick it up a notch and go with some custom lettering. Made to order by a company called 3D Lettering and there are a few different models to chose from. They are high quality and very easy to apply correctly. https://www.amazon.com/Boat-Jetski-Registration-Numbers-raised/dp/B00SI7SX6A/ref=lp_8523008011_1_14?srs=8523008011&ie=UTF8&qid=1493230111&sr=8-14 And while you're at it I'd get the a Chrome Frame Registration Tag. Also High quality & easy to apply. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Boat-Jet-Ski-Registration-Tag-Yearly-Chrome-Blank-Frame-Set-2-Pcs-3-x-3-Inlay-/371188165754?hash=item566c89ec7a:g:ugsAAOSwPhdU~cSl&vxp=mtr Both are pictured on my rig below. Super User gim Posted April 26, 2017 Super User Posted April 26, 2017 You might want to check the state laws in Nebraska. Each state has different requirements for boat registration. In Minnesota, a watercraft registration sticker (renewed every 3 years) is required on the hull in a specific location, depending on what kind of watercraft you have. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted April 26, 2017 Super User Posted April 26, 2017 IL law states block letters 3" high that contrast with the boat finish. I had Iguana Grafix match the script already on my boat in the model#. Have never been questioned about the numbers 2 Quote

Super User Fishing Rhino Posted April 26, 2017 Super User Posted April 26, 2017 Any local sign/graphics shop should be able to meet your needs. It cost me sixty bucks for the numbers, including installation. He wanted to slant them to match the name, but I did not know how anal the state might be, so I told him not to slant them. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted April 27, 2017 Super User Posted April 27, 2017 My local Ranger dealer has a guy that will paint the numbers in colors that match your graphics. That's what I've done on all my boats. 2 Quote

Doing your own lettering is not that difficult or stressful. If you choose to go that route, pick up a roll of painters tape or scotch tape. Figure out where you want your letters and use the tape to make a straight line at the top, bottom, or both for where your letters will go. That way when you start to apply the letters, you can bump the edge up against the straight tape line you won't have to worry if they're straight or not. 3 Quote
jimf Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 I never knew anyone did anything but go to Walmart and buy a pack of numbers and letters and slap them on the boat, after consulting the local regulations on placement of course. Quote
clark9312 Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 Mine were put on that dealer after I bought mine Quote
PECo Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 My dealer put some nice vinyl red and silver numbers on my new boat: However, I prefer raised letters in silver and black that better match my boat: The numbers (and letters) came properly spaced on a translucent backing for easy installation. I used blue painter's tape to mark the position on the hull. I got mine from a vendor on Amazon. You buy them and then send a note to the vendor with your number. The turnaround on my order was quick. They were shipped on the same day. 2 Quote

I've gotta say some of the options mentioned and shown above can tie into the factory graphics really well. 1 Quote

If you bought a Ranger from C&C Marine in Modesto then it was probably the same guy. 1 Quote

Super User Redlinerobert Posted May 1, 2017 Super User Posted May 1, 2017 Chet retired, sold the store. Offered it to me but know nothing about the business. Richard, Paul and Greg are great guys. Saw them last week when I took my boat in for service. 1 Quote
Super User J._Bricker Posted May 1, 2017 Super User Posted May 1, 2017 Agreed, all nice guys and hope Chet's doin' well. Quote
