Adleyfishes Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Can I use this reel for swimbaiting the line capacity is very low but I'd throw braid anyways. The speed is I think 6.3:1. And It looks like a quality reel what are your thoughts? Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 26, 2017 Global Moderator Posted April 26, 2017 No, I wouldn't suggest using this reel or braid for what you're wanting to do. 1 Quote
d-camarena Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Try it. Lets see what those reels are made of Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 26, 2017 Global Moderator Posted April 26, 2017 I use a Curado 300E, Okuma Citrix 364, and a Calcutta 400B for my swimbaits. The 300E is what I use mostly for baits in the size range you're using. A Cardiff 300 would be a good reel for a little less money. Quote

BassGirl71 Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 I own a few KastKing reels, as most know, but I don't own an Assassin at this point. I looked it up on Amazon, and I'm not sure why you wouldn't use this reel for swim baits. For 2-3 ounce swim baits, it seems like a good choice. Again, I don't own this particular reel, but I've had good experiences with KastKing reels, so I would not have an issue with it. They have held up well for me over the past three years. For swim baits with treble hooks, I use mono. For soft plastic swim baits where I'm using something like a VMC weighted swim bait hook, I am okay with braid, but even then I prefer mono. I like the stretch of the mono, but maybe that's personal preference. 1 Quote

Line capacity alone would have me looking elsewhere. 2-3 ounces you could get away with 15lb mono for some treble hook baits but there's really no room to grow with this type of reel. If he decides to spool up some 20lb for an S-waver 200 which is around that 3oz mark and you're getting into spooling your reel on a long cast territory with an assassin. That and generally the reels oriented for larger baits have heftier gears than your standard low profiles. A season later with the occasional backlash with a 3oz lure and I'd be worried about the internals getting more than their intended share of stress. Quote

The white max can hold around 110 of 15 pound what do you think it is 5.3:1 Quote

White max definitely looks a little better suited to what you're trying to do though. And I'd say gear ratio is your preference, I know personally I like the ability to go fast and slow down as needed but some don't. Quote

Thanks I like slower ratios because i reel way to fast, I was until the forum opened up and i double checked line capacity and it blew my mind Quote

I guess I didn't take the line capacity into consideration. I agree the White Max is likely a better choice in that regard. Also, I like the slower gear ratio for swim baits as well as crank baits, so that might be the better reel for him. Good call! Quote
hunterPRO1 Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 id definitely like to see if these reels can handle it, 1 Quote

I don't throw big swimbaits, but I would imagine they would do well there, too - it will be interesting to hear the report back. Quote
Adleyfishes Posted May 6, 2017 Author Posted May 6, 2017 Ok I've been using the whitemax quite a bit lately it's handled well but I have noticed that the spool tension knob is too sensative if i tighten it too little it will begin to backlash but I can slow it down in time. Also makes an annoying sound after long distance casts. Quote
