Austin11C Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 We've gotten ALOT of rain the past week where I live. So much that the dams in the area are flowing over the top. Which makes for high lake and river levels. I've had today planned as a fishing trip for me and my brother for the past couple weeks and don't want to give up on it. I've never Bass fished after a lot of rain. Any bait suggestions? I drove by a favorite cove of mine earlier just to see what it looked like. I seen lots of debri floating in the water and of course the water is very muddy. I'm thinking maybe a senko since I'm sure the fish are looking for food that's been washed into the water. Does rain like this ruin fishing? Completely new to this kind of thing. What's your opinion? I'm not sure if I'll fish the river of the lake it depends on what it looks like when I get there. We will be bank fishing. Thanks guys Quote
Cheetahsneverprosper Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Vibrating jigs, spinnerbaits, something that makes noise and creates a lot of thump so the bass can zero in on it in low visibility. They may be holding tighter to cover, so maybe a jig with rattles and a good size trailer for fishing laydowns. Dark colors would probably help too. 2 Quote
Austin11C Posted April 26, 2017 Author Posted April 26, 2017 That's kinda what I was thinking. I've night fished quite a bit so I figured that for visibility but I didn't know if high water level would affect them much or if there was a primary food source after a hard rain. But I believe I'll start off with a Colorado blade black or blue spinner and see if that works. If not I have some new jigs to try out. Do you think top water would be any count? I Just bought some pad crashers and want to try them out but it might not be a good time to. Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted April 26, 2017 Super User Posted April 26, 2017 They still be biting...I like fishing closer to banks and slow down. Buzzbaits, spinnerbaits and plastics in darker colors. It's warm muddy water...not cold so thats good.. Daveqjr Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 I fish alot of muddy and dirty water. Purple, junebug, and black work well for me in these conditions. I'm usually fishing a stick worm or a lizard rigged weedless since there's alot of logs and moss where i fish. Might be an issue for you too if you saw alot of debris. I also like a purple, black or chartreuse spinnerbait. Good luck! Quote
Megastink Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Black/blue Structure Jig and a Blk/BL Rage Craw for hard cover targets. I'd definitely have a double Colorado spinnerbait in chart/white (gold blades) or black/blue (black or gold blade). Chatterbait with a Rage Craw or menace trailer, KVD 2.5 (rattling) in a chartreuse or red based color. Buzzbait (black is water is dirty, White if clear). Id start there. 1 Quote

Austin11C Posted April 26, 2017 Author Posted April 26, 2017 Thanks for all the ideas guys. Hopefully we'll be able to catch em this evening. I'll post a report later tonight. And after looking at everyone's comments I've narrowed it down to about any normal bait I'd throw except dark haha. Thanks again! 1 Quote
Austin11C Posted April 27, 2017 Author Posted April 27, 2017 Well guys it didn't go so well. I busted a brake line on my truck pulling into the lake parking lot so I had to have someone go get me a new line. We fished for a couple hours, my brother caught a small bass maybe 1lb on a senko. That's the only bite we had and then I had to fix my truck and it was time to go. Better luck next time hopefully. Quote
Super User Raul Posted April 27, 2017 Super User Posted April 27, 2017 Time to pull out your noisy lures and try all that "dirty" water. 1 Quote
Austin11C Posted April 27, 2017 Author Posted April 27, 2017 I tried a few buzz baits, spinner baits, and rattletraps. That's about all the "noisy" baits I have. Not a single bite. But I'm new to a lot of this stuff and I'm not even sure I was working them properly. I'm just glad I got a little practice with my new bait caster. Only backlashed it twice, with a buzzbait. Not bad for only having a bait caster for 3 days. Quote

I was there earlier today. Quote
Austin11C Posted April 27, 2017 Author Posted April 27, 2017 No I went down to melton hill today I figured Norris wouldn't be too good from the bank with the high water. Did you do any good? Quote

Did you do any good? Caught a few, which was actually better than I expected. When I saw online that the water level was over 7 feet above summer pool, I just had to go down there and take a look, I know that's the highest it's been in years. There was debris and loose docks floating everywhere, and the road into Cedar Grove Marina was flooded. The fish were really spread out, I tried quite a few different things, and ended up catching all of them off of people's flooded lawns. Fish were feeding on the worms there, one of the bass I caught had a huge mouthful of them when I looked. 1 Quote
Robert Riley Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 How about heavy rain during the spawn? I assume the rain wouldn't run them off the beds, so would it really make a difference at all? 1 Quote
Super User RoLo Posted April 27, 2017 Super User Posted April 27, 2017 After a heavy rainfall, lure selection becomes far less critical, where placing the boat in moving water can pay dividends (channels, bottlenecks, feeder streams ~) Roger 1 Quote
Austin11C Posted April 28, 2017 Author Posted April 28, 2017 I've fished out of boats after rain but this was my first time. And fishing after a HEAVY RAIN Quote
