Quarry Man Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Does anyone here go on hiking trips? Not talking about a few hour walk on a trail in the woods, but multi-day, off the grid, trips with 1-2 people. Ive always wanted to do that with my dad. I live in pa. Anyone know good hiking spots? Looking for general info about this type of hiking too. Looking to gather info! 2 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted April 26, 2017 Super User Posted April 26, 2017 Never done so myself, only day trips. But I have friends who have hiked the Appalachian Trail! That's some good hiking there. Mountains in PA are fantastic, I'm sure there are great hiking adventures. 2 Quote
5fishlimit Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 I go backpacking often. Let me know if you have any questions. In regards to good places in PA, I would highly recommend the Allegheny National Forest and the North Country Scenic Trail. There's a great section that runs through the Allegheny National Forest. Ohiopyle has the Laurel Highlands hiking trail. Raccoon Creek State park has a good backcountry camping setup with about a 20 mile trail. If you are up to a drive to WV I would recommend going to Dolly Sods Wilderness Area. You will experience scenic backdrops like nothing else in the USA. Red River Gorge in the Daniel Boone National Forest is also a beautiful area for backpacking. You can also go on one of the most famous trails in the world - The Appalachian Trail. 2 Quote

Turkey sandwich Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 There's a lot to see, depending upon what you have in mind. Where in PA are you? Pine Creek Gorge is a good stretch for a multi-day trip and also has excellent trout fishing most of the year. If the Adirondacks are in driving range, I can make a bunch of specific suggestions. 1 Quote

Super User RoLo Posted April 27, 2017 Super User Posted April 27, 2017 I've done a lot of hiking in the past, and still participate in hiking when the opportunity arises. Apparently though I'm not doing nearly enough, because people keep telling me to "Take A Hike!" Roger 5 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted April 27, 2017 Super User Posted April 27, 2017 anymore it's very short day trips, but used to do a little backpack camping here and there. spent a week on the AT once in North GA and even though it rained like 5 of the 7 days (like poured every day) it was actually still a lot of fun. more than anything helped to just kind of reset and break away from "the usual" for a few days. If i were you, i'd look for a good spot that might have a little fishing to be done along the way and get a little carry rod and have at it! 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted April 30, 2017 Super User Posted April 30, 2017 I would love to take a week or two and hike some of the appalachian trail.I would probably need to get in a little better shape first. We have a lot of trails here. One is in the Ocala forest, and you can primitive camp and fish as you go. 1 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted May 1, 2017 Super User Posted May 1, 2017 Love hiking, hate ticks. I do all my hiking on my treadmill while watching outdoor vids on youtube. Quote
Jay Dubs Posted September 18, 2017 Posted September 18, 2017 We do a vacation to Tennessee or Georgia every year and section hike the AT. There are also some beautiful waterfall trails which involve following mountain streams up hill. Bring an UL spinning rig and some rooster tails or better yet, the Blue Fox minnow spins. You'll get some browns, brookies and rainbows up to 16"-18". Check the rules, because some creeks you can only fish from May to November, or something like that. Have fun! 2 Quote
Super User senile1 Posted September 18, 2017 Super User Posted September 18, 2017 Further away, the White Mountains in New Hampshire are not that far from you and provide excellent multi-day hiking opportunities with some of the higher peaks on the AT. Check out sites like www.4000footers.com, www.summitpost.org, www.hikenewengland.com, and www.alltrails.com for good, detailed information about the trails, places to camp or lodge, etc. Even further away, Glacier National Park is one of the most majestic places to do multi-day hikes. Check it out on http://www.hikinginglacier.com and www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/hikingthetrails.htm. (At Glacier, be aware that there are Grizzly bears and plan accordingly.) 1 Quote
Burtonxj Posted September 18, 2017 Posted September 18, 2017 Go on a few overnighters every year on sections of the AT in Virginia..few other pretty cool loops in the area as well. I'm more into kayak / camp trips though. Good friend of mine crossed into Maine a little while ago on his AT thru hike..kinda regret not tagging along. He's been putting up 20+ mile days. Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted September 19, 2017 Super User Posted September 19, 2017 Hiking is one of my favorite outdoor sports and a good way to find good fishing spots. 1 Quote
Super User Gundog Posted September 19, 2017 Super User Posted September 19, 2017 I love to hike but my right ankle doesn't. Its a shame I can't just leave it at home. Went out yesterday just for a long walk on a flat trail. I'm feeling it today. Hobbling like a 90 yr old man. 1 Quote
