first boat?

I'm a college freshman looking to get my first boat. RIght now I'm thinkin about getting  10-14 ft. jon boat that can fit on top of a station wagon. Then I would get a trolling motor and depth finder for it. Here's the one I'm thinking about: http://www.trackerboats.com/boat/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.gallery&boat=2260. Im thinking about using it whenever I'm at home, and since I can't take my parent's car up to college in the finger lakes region, I'm thinking about bringing it up there and using a friends car to take it to local waters there. What do you guys think? Any suggestions for a different boat?

For smaller waters it would be o.k.  Check out canoes also.

yea i want something that would be good for the small electric only lakes in the area, and maybe some creeks on the potomac river, but I also want somehing I can stand in

Try a local Wantad/Craigslist/Ebay for something used, it never makes sense to buy new.  You can probably find a used 14' Jon boat with a trolling motor and battery for under $500. Good Luck

If it's gotta go on top a wagon, be care with the weight.  A heavy guage 14' jon can get pretty darn heavy real quick.  Just loading a 1436 in and out of the bed of a pickup and getting in and out of the water can be a job for one person.   I'm not refering to it being too much weight on top of the vehicle, it's the having to get it up there by yourself.   This is one time you might want to look for a cheap, light guage 12 ft jon or as mentioned, a canoe.  I hauled and handled a 17' Grumman canoe by myself of the top of and old car for a bunch of years.

Light enough to get on the roof alone and sturdy enough to hold 2 adults.
