So I just recently bought one and I have never fished Shimano before.  Always been fishing Abu Garcias. My question is how do you work the internal breaking system?  There are 4 pins which goes up or down but is that how you set the breaking or is there suppose to be some clicking involved to show that the breaks are applied?

I don't know why you would want to break your brand new reel... :P

However applying the brakes is usually a good idea. If you read your manual, it will explain how the braking system works. My three Chronarch MGL's all came with all 4 brakes on. Turning a brake on or off is as easy as pushing the brake tab in towards the center or pulling it out away from the center. There's an external adjustment wheel to fine tune from 1-6, but it is only for making very subtle braking adjustments. Those internal brakes are what makes the big difference.

Thanks for the info. The instruction manual is in Japanese because I bought it from Digitaka. Will definitely take it out tomorrow to fine tune the internal breaks

Like fishballer says, to add The general rule when turning an even amount of brakes (2) turn on the directly opposite brake.  If you are experienced with BCs, I'd recommend 2 on and adjust 1-6 as necessary.

Same as above....I keep 2 on and the wheel is adjusted after your spool tensioner.  Mine is set at 4

Shimano's intent with their new SVS is to leave all 4 tabs on and make adjustments with the dial. You can free the reel up with a drop of oil on the brake drum. They don't stress this like they did with the original SVS infinity for noise reduction, but it definitely speeds the reel up.  As mentioned go easy on the spool tension.  If the reel goes wild on you just take a dry Q-Tip to the drum.

On my MGL I clicked two brakes on and set the outside dial on "2" and have never changed the setting and have the same setting on my other 7 Shimano reels with SVS braking. The MGL is spooled with 15lb InvizX flouro (.013 dia) and used for a variety of plastics, but primarily Senkos.  Keep the SVS ring wiped with a QTip with a bit of bearing oil on it and it will stop the brake shoes from sort of screaming when you cast.  I have 8 Shimanos now with the SVS braking system and they all required a QTip with oil which, in my case is after each outing because I fish the day lights out of them.  You will know when it is needed because the noise of the brake shoes is quite obvious.

I also just got a Chronarch MGL, so I'm interested in what you guys are talking about. However, I'm not mechanical at all and I have no idea what you guys are saying to oil... Where is the "break drum" and "SVS ring"? There's an exterior dial on the palming side, an internal area with the break pins, and where do I put the oil? Sorry I'm such a newbie!

The side plate with the adjustment dial has a brass cone on the inside that the brakes push against. lightly oil the surface of it.  Don't leave any excess.
