Adleyfishes Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Hello my aunt is related to the guy who invented Fire line so she gets it for free sometimes. This year for Christmas I got some Fire line crystal 6 pound. I fish open water and clear bodies of water. Is it too light? I really want casting distance. I also will tie a leader. what are your opinions. Also do in need backing? Note: I live in Iowa if that makes a difference. Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted April 25, 2017 Super User Posted April 25, 2017 No line is too light as long as your drag is set below it's breaking strength! ?? Fireline is ok, a bit stiff and tends to get squished out of round but it's tough stuff for its size. If it was free it was worth every penny ? I'd just spool it up. I don't do backing. Never felt the need to do it and I don't see the advantage when the line was free anyways. Quote

Super User BrianinMD Posted April 25, 2017 Super User Posted April 25, 2017 Lack of backing can cause braid to spin on the reel. Quick and easy to throw some cheap mono on to make sure it does not happen. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted April 25, 2017 Super User Posted April 25, 2017 A few turns of your reel to put mono backing on is a fine thing to do. You could also put a strip of electrical tape on the spool then tie your braid. As for 6lb Fireline, it's thin, that's for sure. You'll need to tie a very secure leader knot to prevent slippage. Usually that entails extra loops up and back if you're tying the Alberto. A Uni-to-uni probably ok with 6 or 7. I personally bottom out at 10lb Power Pro for my braid. Have used Fireline, can't remember the test. It was ok. Some people love it/swear by it. I simply prefer Power Pro. I'm sure you'll do well making sure your drag isn't too tight and your leader knot is solid, rod not too stiff, either. Good luck! Quote

Super User Team9nine Posted April 25, 2017 Super User Posted April 25, 2017 You'll be fine, just avoid the heavy cover and fish appropriate sized baits. I bass fish with 3# and 5# PP all the time, and a friend of mine landed a 7# bass on 6# Fireline while fishing with me last year. I would definitely add some cheap mono backing before spooling, or something else for superline to bite and lock down on...and no, living in Iowa makes no difference 2 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted April 25, 2017 Super User Posted April 25, 2017 Be careful in the wind. The really fine lines can do some crazy stuff with a little slack and a bit of wind....catching itself on leader knot; looping on rod eyes; impossibly tying itself into mystery knots..... Quote

Adleyfishes Posted April 25, 2017 Author Posted April 25, 2017 Can I still throw around a light t-rig? Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted April 25, 2017 Super User Posted April 25, 2017 2 minutes ago, Adleyfishes said: Can I still throw around a light t-rig? Yes. As long as the cover doesn't present a lot snagging hazards, you'll be fine. I regularly catch a lot of 3 - 4 lb. bass and/or northern pike while crappie fishing. I use nothing but 2# test Fireline Crystal with a 6' length of 4# test fluorocarbon. All my barbs are crushed down as well. Have lost very few in the course of many decades. Also, try cranking your drag ALL the way down - TIGHT. And back reel. You'll be surprised at how effective this method of fighting big fish on light line can be. Assuming of course, that you are using spinning gear! 1 Quote
The Bassman Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 6lb. Fireline is crazy strong. I think it breaks at almost triple that. I use thin braids (I know Fireline is fused) and the biggest hazard is that they can cut you real fast if you're not careful. 1 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Wow! 6lb Fireline will be like fishing with sewing thread. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted April 25, 2017 Super User Posted April 25, 2017 I used 8lb Fireline on all my spinning reels for quite a while. I liked it a lot. I never used a leader. It is a little stiff when new, but it softens up quickly. I'd use it again anytime. Quote
AdamV _bassin Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Because braid is already very thin I don't go under 15 pound test with a lighter leader if I want really light line I get 9-10 pound floro Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted April 26, 2017 Super User Posted April 26, 2017 I go down to #5 lb. PP on an UL outfit I target panfish with ... I forgot to tell the bass I was targeting panfish ! Loosen drag , ease into a hookset (as light braid can have issus with breaking when snapping the line tight) . Quote

Had a kid at work bring his reel in for me to look at since his "drag wasn't working" the way it should even with it tightened to max.His drag was fine, his braid was slipping on the spool because he had no backing. One wrap of electrical tape on the spool will save you a headache down the line.
