rboat Posted April 24, 2017 Posted April 24, 2017 I have heard several people say that they always put a feathered treble hook on the rear of all their jerkbaits. Other say no because it kills some of the lures own action. Some lures like the rapala x-rap come with a feathered rear treble. So what do you all do with your jerkbaits, and do have any opinion for or against the rear feathered treble hook? Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted April 24, 2017 Super User Posted April 24, 2017 I'm neutral on them. Baits that come with a feathered treble I fish as is. When I have added one to a bait that didn't have one originally I never was convinced that they really help. The concept of a feathered treble seems to compliment a bait that is fished very subtlety like a dead stick rod. 4 Quote
Esoxfreak Posted April 24, 2017 Posted April 24, 2017 Feathers have a tendancy ( not a tendancy...they do)to make the bait a bit more sluggish, and straighten it out. I personally don't use em. I think they are there to...never mind what I think,I don't wanna make everyone mad again,So I digress, I'm sure they have their place. But I feel it doesn't belong on a jerkbait. Quote
jr231 Posted April 24, 2017 Posted April 24, 2017 Feathers are perfect for jerkbaits that you plan on letting suspend for more than a few seconds. Sometimes, regardless of how much you pay for a jerkbait, they don't suspend perfectly. Meaning either slow sink or slow rise... Usually it's slow rise. Suspenstrips (lead tape) is perfect for getting them to suspend just slightly nose down. I use braid with a loop knot for jerkbaits and since braid floats I usually have to use just a small piece of lead tape to get the jerkbait to stay put. Some say you rip the hooks out of a bass mouth using braid with trebles. This has not been my experience at all.. just a nice smooth sweep has worked for me just fine. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 25, 2017 Global Moderator Posted April 25, 2017 I don't like feathered trebles on my jerkabits. Only thing they seem to do better is catch more crappie or trout for me. 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted April 25, 2017 Super User Posted April 25, 2017 I'm with Dwight, I'm neutral on the issue. I think the feathered treble on an X-Rap makes it useable as a cold water bait because it is really erratic but on other baits not so much. I tried adding feathered trebles to baits without it and I didn't find a lot of difference, so now the only time I add a feathered treble is when I need to replace one that came on a bait. Quote
