After 20+ years at the same job, Monday I start looking for new employment. I am nervous, yet excited. I have not been in this position for a long time. I already have an interview next week with another operation doing very similar, if not the same work I have been doing the last 20 years, and will explore other places where my skills and exp. could be valuable, some perhaps out side the AG/Farming world.

No real juicy story to tell on my departure from my former company. As many of you know my boss suffered a terrible accident a few years ago, losing his right leg from the hip down. I thought that was the end right there, in more ways than one. I stayed on for a couple more years to see what would happen, and obviously things have changed during that time, and I am no longer happy or comfortable there. So we are parting ways.

Without getting into personal details, over the last year or so I have become a "middle man" between my boss/part owner, and his boss/ majority owner of the company. She wanted me to keep tabs on him, and challenge him on what I felt were questionable decisions as she had lost faith in him and his decision making process. Once my boss learned of this, he was very difficult to work with, and our relationship fell apart.

It all came to a head last Weds. with him informing me he didn't want me there any more, and her saying "he can't do that to you, you work for me". And in my best interest I decided I was not going to play this game anymore, and since I am just an employee, and he's a little more, guess who had to go?? So right then and there, after 20 years it was over. Not a healthy position to be in for me, or for anyone IMHO. I made arrangements Friday with the owner for my back vacation time/severance pay, and said my good byes to both him, her and my former co-workers and will move onward and (hopefully) upward starting Monday.

Too bad the majority owner didn't intervene and send the other guy packing.  Then again, these things happen sometimes and I have no doubt that given your positive attitude you will end up in a better place. I wish you much success in finding your new role.

Good luck with the job interviews.  I'm sorry this happened to you, but maybe this is for the better.  There's plenty of better employers out there looking for good employees such as yourself.  Keep you head up & stay positive.

Oh she tried to intervene, but it was more like a "can't you two just kiss and make up" deal...It seemed plainly obvious she had no interest in a "him or me" type situation. And I had no leverage to force the issue anyway, being just a paid employee. I saw this coming a mile away shortly after she put me in this position of being her eyes and ears on him last season. He started cutting my hours, giving my tasks to other guys, and trying to get me to quit as far back as last July/Aug. Those games picked right up where they left off last season when we got back at it a few weeks ago. It was a danged if you do, danged if you don't thing. Oh well...life goes on, I'll be fine.

I've never met you farmer, but I feel that I know you.

You've given me the sense that you're a clear thinker and a survivor, and really that's all it takes.

In any event, I wish you the best of luck, though you probably won't need it

As a guy who has been forced to change careers because of circumstances beyond my control, I can relate. Although our situations are quite a bit different, the end game is the same. With any luck, the new gig will be better than the last. If not, there's always the next one after that. You're fortunate you have 20 years experience. Although not many, there are some options for us old guys. I truly wish you well in your new endeavor.

Overall, it is a good move on your part.

You would have been in an untenantable position in the future and no matter what you did it would be wrong.

Good luck in finding a new career.

I would also like to suggest you follow your prior company to see if they close their doors. If so, then you got out at a good time.

All the best for your future endeavors.
