rboat Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 Going to jump onto the WP bandwagon which size is most recommended? 90 or 130? I also heard they are going to make a 110. Should I wait for that size? What do you all think? Quote
Fishin' Fool Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 I think from the consensus from my reading before it seemed like the 130 was the size you want. Quote
S. Sass Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 Seems 130 is the more popular size. I have read some say the 90 can be a little touchy to get it to perform the plopper part regularly. But I also have read others say they had no problems with the 90. I bought the 130 because I like fishing for largemouth and I am in a nice fishing place in Texas. So for them to hit the 130 they shouldn't have any issues. Maybe somewhere else the 90 may be a better fit I don't know. I know you didn't ask but usually people contemplating buying one also want to know what colors are popular. I bought the Loon as many claim the Loon(black) or the Bone (off white) are top color picks. The Bone was sold out at BP the day I was there so I took the Loon. I am sure other WP pros will chime in with more info. I will tell you it has some really nice extra stout treble hooks. I have only fished the one I have a few times before going back to my frog. I have no doubt it will get strikes. I actually had a very small bass, seriously the same size as the WP I was using try and eat it. But no fish of any size has attempted to hit mine in the brief time I have thrown it. Should be fun when I fish it and get hit. 1 Quote
Airman4754 Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 The 130's are just right and catch fish of all sizes. I bought two of the big ones without ever seeing one in person. My goodness are they huge. It's like pitching up my Optimax where the prop is just out of the water and throwing it in gear. 2 Quote
chadmack282 Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 Anyone use the 190? 2.75 oz & 7.5" long that's a big SOB!!! 1 Quote

For lakes where solid bass run in the 15-16" range that would be just right. I have 2 90s a 130 and a 190. Interestingly, in northern WI the 130 size was recommended on a trophy Musky lake. Guessing due to fishing pressure. I have yet to get a fish on one, but would say that if you know the size the majority on your waters are throwing, I would try the other size. 5 hours ago, Mosster47 said: The 130's are just right and catch fish of all sizes. Some of the Musky plugs we toss up here sound like someone dumped a body overboard when they land, there is know way to get a quiet splash free landing with one. Quote

Super User kickerfish1 Posted April 23, 2017 Super User Posted April 23, 2017 I have only used the 90 and have had no issues with catching fish or achieving the correct action. 1 Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted April 23, 2017 Super User Posted April 23, 2017 Just looked on TW and only saw the 90 size in the silent, guess I will be picking one up since it looks like maybe it's days are numbered in the 90 size? Quote

I thought it was the only size for a long time. Never even saw a 130 until about 3 years ago,lol...but that 130 gets all fish of all sizes...maybe I got a pic here...yep. That is a 130. 2 Quote

Figured it out, on the River2sea site, they no longer list the 90 size with rattles. I wonder if they a phasing out the rattles, since I can't imagine they can even be heard. The two 90s I have, have the rattles. This matches TW which only has the 90 in the silent model. Quote
Super User gim Posted April 25, 2017 Super User Posted April 25, 2017 I think it depends on what part of the country you live. In the south there bass get much bigger, I think the 130 is the right size. In the north, a 90 is probably a better option. You need a friggin' flag pole to toss the 190. It was specifically designed for muskies. Quote
jtharris3 Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 I've got two of the 90's and they work great for me. No issues. Quote
Travis Gasper Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 I have 6 of the 90's and 2 of the 130's. Get one of each to start out and see what works better for you. I've caught a bunch on the 90, and none on the 130 yet. Still have to put in more time with it though. Quote
npl_texas Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 What kind of set up are you guys throwing the 130 on? Quote

Every time I read this, it cracks me up....I'd never heard of a 'silent' WP...I don't care if you take out the rattles and tape down the hooks....no Whopper Plopper is ever going to be anywhere near silent. 8 minutes ago, npl_texas said: What kind of set up are you guys throwing the 130 on? I use a 7'MHF - spinner bait rod. Rod is 'rated' to 1oz, and the lure is a little heavy, but casts quite well. 2 Quote

I agree, the thing is loud, the rattles are pretty useless, I guess if you only twitch the bait without moving the tail the rattles might matter lol. Wouldn't be surprised in the future to only see the not so silent model available. Quote
