JKline21 Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 Gonna be fishing a federation tournament Sunday may 7th on the Potomac out of smallwood state park launch. Just looking for some info on stage of spawn,"hot spots", types of baits to throw, that kinda stuff. Is there any a-rig limitations on the number of hooks? Never been there before so any advice is appreciated. Gonna be there the fri and sat before to practice. Thanks in advance Quote
Super User Sam Posted April 22, 2017 Super User Posted April 22, 2017 Check out Mattawoman Creek on Google Earth and a paper map if you have one as the ramp is on that creek. Learn as much as you can about Mattawoman. Quote
RichF Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 5 wires, 3 hooks for A-rig. It's useless on the River though. Quote
jhoffman Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 Dont you worry buddy, we will find them On 4/23/2017 at 6:59 PM, RichF said: 5 wires, 3 hooks for A-rig. It's useless on the River though. I would think we are way past the rig working effectively. The big question is will the herring show up? Quote

The big question is will the herring show up? Fished a lot of local tournament at potomac river, a-rig is only bait that is totally useless at that river. Herring run already ended in late march. my favorite bait to throw on that river is white and chartreuse 3/8 spinnerbait. if the shads are popping up, fluke or top water works wonders. most of time i tend to use senko or shakey head 1/8 oz with 4-6 inch worm. 1 Quote
jhoffman Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 The conditions were absolutely horrible. I caught my fish on a white swim jig and one kicker on a dbomb. Didnt matter anyhow, never had my new boat need to run conditions like that. Ended up killing the battery, missed the weigh in and got DQ'd . Id love to see that place again in good weather. Pretty far drive from my house and that traffic is horrible with a full size towing a boat. Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 12, 2017 Super User Posted May 12, 2017 J, my bass club doesn't fish the Potomac any more. That body of water can humble any man, women or child who goes bass fishing. You need to return when the grass gets control of the river. Sorry you did not do as well as you hoped but it is another fishing adventure for your memoirs. Take care and come on back for another whack at the Potomac River. Quote
