Super User Senko lover Posted April 21, 2017 Super User Posted April 21, 2017 The way I defend myself, I could be using the money for drugs...or smokes...or strippers...you choose, Mom and Dad In all seriousness, I guess I'm a pretty simple guy. I don't like buying things for myself that much. I have three rods and reels that I regularly take with me, and a couple other sticks. While they're nowhere near nice equipment, they serve me well. I've found the lures I like and I stock up on them when they run out. That's about it for me. 1 Quote

Sadly though I just got this boot off of my broken foot so I haven't been out yet. For me, there is no cure to binge spending. I stop when I feel like I have everything for the year and a few extras. I've been buying lures, rods, and reels, and then things for the boat. It's an addiction, but it's a fun one. I should add that probably 90-95% of the things I are also used by my dad. Buying for 2 people, I'd say I do pretty good each year with how much I buy. Quote

Jaderose Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 Meh.....I've reached the "maintain" phase. I buy to replace mostly now. I've probably got 10 times less than some guys got and 10 times more than I need. Doesn't mean I don't get suckered in sometimes but it happens rarely now. 1 Quote

Same here for me...with the amount of stuff I have accumulated over the past 6 years, I will be good for awhile. My new hobby is trying to grow my savings account in hopes that one day I can retire early become a snow bird and be healthy enough to fish everyday. 2 Quote

frosty Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 To control the bait monkey, I try to keep myself in a perpetual state of brokenness. No money's no wormies I find myself buying things because I'd like to try a new technique but I find myself just throwing a senko or a frog. 1 Quote

I'm right with you there I got all the stuff to be Neko fabulous or Rage rigging but I'll probably just fish senkos or a drop shot. 1 Quote
david in va Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 (edited) A wise old man told me when I was a kid; I was in the local country store, I had a quarter, big money back then. look at the candy and walked away from it, Mr. Pillow said , son you need money for a piece of candy, I said no sir I have a quarter. He said Son if you have money in your pocket and don't buy what you want, you may as well have a pocket full of rocks. I took him at his word and have been happy every since. Follow one rule NEVER use family money to just buy what you want. I am going to buy me another BC David Edited April 22, 2017 by david in va spelling 1 Quote
badgerboyng Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 This thread is hilarious! But in all seriousness, here's what I do: 1) stick to a set budget for general lures and whatnot that you agree on with your wife. This is the money that you can spend without feeling guilty 2) if you want an expensive new rod, reel, or other substantially expensive item... It's okay to buy it. However! My rule is that if anything costs a substantial amount of money, I will write down what it is and why I want it. Then I'll give it three months or more, and then I'll re-read my reasoning and decide whether or not I still really want it. Believe me, it is sooo hard to wait a few months to make the purchase, but I can't tell you how many times I've changed my mind during that time. If you give it some time and still really want it, then by all means go buy it! No need to feel guilty about buying something that you've put a lot of thought into and that you know you will use. 3) If you still feel guilty or need to spend more money after the first 2 steps, then go out and do some side jobs to earn some extra cash! I used to detail clean cars for $80 a pop... so if I wanted a new rod, I could work hard to clean a few cars and then I'd be able to spend my money happily, knowing I earned it for myself. Everyone has a skill that they can use to make money on the side. My dad, for example, creates cool backyard decorations out of wooden pallets that he gets for free from work, and he sells it for some extra cash! Be creative! Hope this helps! 4 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 22, 2017 Global Moderator Posted April 22, 2017 I have no control. I have found that once you get to a certain point, you own most everything out there and slow down a bit, but it never stops. 2 Quote
Dave A Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 I save money by making my own lures. I pour soft plastics, have almost every jig mold, paint cranks, buy hooks and skirt tabs and split rings in bulk and have started looking into making my own rods. Wait- what were we talking about? 1 Quote

Basseditor Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 It's so pleasurable, I won't stop. But now I don't open emails from tackle companies because I'll find a deal to good to pass up. on a side note, I was at a gas station a few weeks ago that has a tackle section. They had my favorite lipless crankbaits, which have been discontinued (more like rebranded). I bought them all...41 baits at regular retail price. Watch for my eBay listings next winter. lol I think I'll at least double my money if what I saw last year on eBay continues. 1 Quote

Super User Darren. Posted April 22, 2017 Super User Posted April 22, 2017 I have some control, then I lose it, then I get it back, then I lose it again. Slowed down a bit on fishing gear though, because these days it's all about power tools... Milwaukee has become my best friend. Home Depot knows me by name. At least I am FINALLY finishing projects around the house. So I pay for tools and do the work myself rather than pay a carpenter waaaay more to do the work...and have no tools to play with afterward! So right now I'm suffering from a Tool Monkey attack. 3 Quote
